Fished with Rev, Dennis, and Will at Golden Meadow. They paddled a little further than I did, I had to get back home by 2:00 PM so I stayed fairly close in. Ponds and canals were very shallow (6" - 18"). Canals were a bit murky and back ends of ponds were pretty clear. Saw lots of reds and sheepshead, but they were not really wanting to "take the bait".

Ended up with 2 reds and two trout...Maybe next time...:cool::cool:

We threw everything we had at them. Caught one beast on a nemire spoon, the rest came on johnson silver minnows - 1/8th ounce. Most reds had lockjaw

Sounds like pretty regular March fishing.

The raw number of visible fish is what was so aggrevating. I even named one red "SKippy". He was high strung and stupid. He was over there banging something against the bank I'd throw at him a few time but soon as I got too close he would charge off. 5 minutes later he was back in the same spot doing the same thing. I fished that same fish 4 times. I was about to tie on a bunch of treble hooks and start snagging them!

I did cut one open whose stomach was full of little crabs. I mean like 5 of em.

Friday was a great day - it was really nice to meet you surfmonkey.

I’ll second what Rev said - I have never seen so many tailing reds - it was truly unbelievable. They were finicky, but I wound up catching a bunch of them - I think I would've caught way more if hadn't been stubbornly in pursuit of trout. I wasted hours in Catfish lake to catch 9 short trout and 1 keeper. As soon as I gave up on the trout and got back into the marsh it was on.

Incidentally, I lost 2 nice reds while I was trying to CPR them - photographing reds on a ruler right after they have been caught is way-tough in a kayak. I am glad that wasn't for $$. If anyone has any advise on how they do this, I'd love to hear it.

I did managed to photo 3 others, including the 31" in the pictures and the 22" I photo'ed as I was releasing him.

BTW - The only lure I used on reds all day was an 1/8 oz Johnson's silver minnow. As long as it was within 12" of their mouth, they gobbled it up.

Glad to hear there is a red or two left out there. I have to work a turnaround for the month of April but come May it will be ON.

All in,

I recently bought some 15 dollar Boga grips from Academy. Mustad is the brand and that is a sure fire way to grip a fish. If you can hold on to the handle of those things, the fish isn't gonna get off. I have put those things in the lip of a 30 inch plus red and had them shake and they don't go anywhere. Hold Boga grip with one hand, take picture with the other. No lost fish.

Hey Bill,

The public launch behind the park but stay north from there as the southern area is a private lease and no trespassing is enforced. The northern area is private also but so far we have been told to go ahead and fish - realize that could change anytime.

We use the public launch right next to GM city park. To ge there from anywhere north of GM, get on the 4-lane highway behing the town. Take the first possible right after passing the city limit sign, go across the small bridge that spans the drainage ditch, pass the tennis courts and pool. At the end of the road, take a right, cross the levy to the launch (it is right next to the pumpigng station. As always, watch your speed, the limit is 15mph in the park and there is usually one of GM's finest with a radar.

Also, they are enforcing a law that you must stay in the right-hand lane unless passing another vehicle...I got a ticket a few weeks ago for staying in the fast lane for too long

btw...Nice fish gentleman!

I have the fish grips. The ones they're always giving away in the raffle drawings. They're plastic and about $15, and they float. I keep them tied to my boat and have had a 34" red on them in the water. They kinda work like vise grips except not adjustable. I have also landed a 4'+ gar with them. With these things tied off to the yak, I am not afraid to lose any fish. Except flounders of course. Those things just don't like being caught.

your kayak looked as messy as my canoe did Saturday afternoon. Mud everywhere.

LOL - I can't beleive you spotted that. Yeah, I MacGyvered a rudder for my Perception Search 13. I bought a Yakima rudder blade on ebay for like $8.00 and fabricated a bracket for it. Then I used an old throttle cable as a steering cable. It ain't pretty, but I am in for about $15.00 and it works great. Maybe I'll some post pics tonight.

I forgot to mention how many times he cut me off on the way to fish:boese104:

then of course he's catching fish and doesn't bother to give a brother a hand until I call him:sniffle:

good thing I wasn't drowning while he was busy catching all the reds:sterb038:
