Directed at Yak-a-lou but probably any of you guys can answer this - I know you can purchase your
2010 - 2011 license now; but does it become effective this month or next? I've been having to purchase daily trip license for the past month (not wanting to sink $90 bucks for the annual out of state license for one month of fishing). I need to go fishing this weekend and didn't know my options.:stupid:

If you are buying the annual license then it starts on the date of expiration of the old license only... not good before that date. You would have to buy a temp license for the day(s) you want to fish and you can specify a specific day(s) on that temporary license. We just did this not long ago for a friend of mine fishing down here and the start date was later in the week when we went. We did get checked and the agent looked at the dates on the license before clearing him OK to fish.
Hope this helps.

Why does Louisiana do this? Why do we not make it a year from when you purchase it?

Thanks Branch - So the annual license runs July to July? So any fishing in the month of June would have to be purchased for that day? Am I interpreting you correctly?
I'm with you Taco - pain in the a** that they do it that way!

I thought an annual license purchased in June for 2010-2011 season was valid for the month of June too. YAL would certainly know better, though.

FT,
My guess, the State employees don't want to deal with the complexity of breaking out the revenues of a yearly license across fiscal years. So they probably squash that recommendation anytime it come up.

- Annual hunting and fishing licenses go on sale June 1 each year and expire June 30 of the following year.
- All recreational licenses are valid from the date of purchase and expire on June 30 each year.
From the LA WLF website on licenses: http://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/licenses/fishing/recreational/
I think you're okay if you want to buy a license now that will last through the year.
I concur with Taco. I know for in-staters, you can buy a licence now that is good thru next year, starting now. Gotta be the same for foreigners.

Technically it is good July 1st 2010 through the last day of June, 2011.
This story has always worked for me... "Officer I stopped to buy a license and all they offered for sale was the new license. They wouldn't let me buy an old one." As far as I know this is true with resident and non-resident licenses. The new licenses are offered for sale in early June. I'm not sure if they'll even sell you an annual 2009/2010 license right now. Trip license? Yes. Annual license? I don't think so.
I'd buy the 2010/2011 non-resident annual license and take the (very) slim chance that Officer Grumpy would have a heart. That's just me. If you get a ticket under those circumstances, I'll pay it for you as long as Officer Grumpy doesn't tell me that the reason he pushed things so far was because you cussed him. ;)

Something like that. Short version... blame the bean counters.
Strangely enough, commercial licenses are valid from January 1st, through December 31st.
Big license sales months = June/July - fishing, September/October/November - hunting and December/January - commercial.

The main reason LA license sales are from July 1 through June 30 is that the main source of revenue for the department is license sales. The fixed date makes it easier for income projections. Having a "year from purchase" expiration would make revenue projections more eratic and a little harder to forecast.
However, they could do this for nonresident licenses without much impact.
I agree with Y-a-L, at some point this month you will only be able to purchase "next year's licence." If that's all that's available to you and you are otherwise not breaking any laws AND are courteous to the checking officer, you likely won't have any problems.

Thanks YAK and the rest of you guys - I think I have kept my 5 daily trip licenses for this past month in my wallet, so I'll plead that I have tried to do the right thing since moving here and if most of the officers are of the quality as YAK then I feel I'll be okay! Looks like I'm going fishing this weekend with my new annual license!

Looks like the closure line is slowly creeping that way. As of now, it's still open.
