If I have a couple dozen shrimp or cocahoes or maybe even some croaker in a 4-5 gallon live well how often should I cycle the water? I'm getting a Malibu Stealth with the built in livewell and I'm trying to decide if it is worth it or necessary to spend the extra $30 on a timer for the livewell, considering I can't run the pump continuously for an entire trip on the 7ah battery.
My experience has been that shrimp need pretty constant aeration. Croakers a little bit less than that and cacahoes still less. I guess much of it depends upon the size of the tank and the amount of bait.

If it has a manual switch and you can remember to cycle it a few times then you are ok, if not then spend the $30 and get the timer. Also depends on the temp for the day..the hotter the day the more circulation you will need, the colder the day hardly any at all.

so let's say I get the timer, do I wire it between the pump and the switch or between the switch and the battery? I'm thinking between the pump and the switch.

If you don't go with the timer, then go with a wireless switch on a key fob like a car alarm. That way if you get a booth near the window at Huddle House you can turn on the aereator without leaving your seat. :)

Fill an old Gatorade bottle with water, freeze it and put it with your bait = cycle less often.
