My understanding...

SPOT = excellent for near shore. Should last about 24 hours after being activated.

EPIRB = recommended for offshore. Should last about 48 hours after being activated.

PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong.

Question: What are the normal annual fees for each? Barrett?

No fees with the epirb. Just needs a battery replacement after some years which is kinda pricey. Not sure of the fee price with the spot. The neat thing with the spot you can give people a code from your unit and they can follow you on google earth while you are out. Its great if you fish alone or unfamiliar areas. You tell a wife you will be home at 4pm and its now 6pm she can see where you are on the water or what. With the free fee for a year I am thinking hard about getting one.
