does anyone have any suggestions for hauling two yaks on the roof of my 4runner. i have the yakima mounts on the factory toyota rack and it works great for just 1 yak. the yakima system for 2 'yaks costs $$$ that i don't currently have. any suggestions on a cheap(er) solution that i might be overlooking?

You could try one of the cheaper kits with the foam blocks and pull straps. Use the blocks on the rack then wrap the strap over the yak, under the rack, back over the yak, under the rack again and pull tight. We use this for my brother's yak and if tightened properly it will not go anywhere.

it would be about half the price of a thule or yakima system.
I have had this dilemma for awhile. I use land shark saddles for one boat, b/c I can easily load my Manta Ray 14' by myself. Then a buddy got a Ride kayak, so I bought a kayak stacker on ebay for less than $50. It is much harder to load than the land shark or mako saddles, but it works. Depending on the width of your bars, you might fit 2 saddle systems. Again, fish around on e-bay and you get them for less than half retail many times. i am looking at trying 2 saddles, but my kayaks are 28" and 30" and my bars 56". Tiz-ight!

I use two Malone carriers bolted directly to my factory rack. One J carrier and one gull wing type. Less than $200 for both.

yep. i have the mako aero saddles and love 'em for my heritage 12', but my buddy just got an ocean kayak & i definitely can't fit another set of saddles on the factory rack, i'd have to get the yakima system with extensions to do that. ebay is a great tip - i don't know why i hadn't thought of that.
thanks y'all - with any luck i'll be posting to sell my 3 month old yakima saddles soon.
I misread your post, and thought you already had the Yakima system, attached to the factory rack. My bad. I went ahead and bought the Yakima stuff years ago for my Jeep Cherokee, and when I got the FJ, just bought the attachments that worked on the FJ factory rack, and kept my old bars and mounts. I like the hullyrollers w/Mako Saddle idea, just DK if it will fit my 2 wide kayaks. Gotta try it out first, so PM me when you put those Makos on the market.

I have a pair of these if you want to try them before you buy something like it. I just don't have straps to loan with it.

In a pinch you can stack one kayak atop the other. I did that when buddy bought the Ride from Pack & Paddle, so we could hit Chicot on the way home.

Here is the one you were looking at.
BTW,
I hauled three kayaks at a time on my Ranger with the Yakima stacker but it was SUPER AGGRAVATING to use. The boats wanted to fall and slide while loading them. I never had an adult helping just my 12 year old so it may have been different with another adult.
I have a trailer but still haul on my roof also. I bought two pairs of Thule Hull-a-ports like this

at Cabela's in the bargain cave for $62.00 a pair. Hands down the better way to go. I was like you and couldn't affford three sets of saddles and rollers at the time. My new ones are so much easier to use.
I would suggest using a stacker before you buy one.

I have stacked kayaks on top of revredfish's truck before. I've said it before and will say it again, if you have room at the house a trailer is the way to go.

i was just given an old utility trailer that would be perfect for yaks with a little bit of work, but i don't have off-street parking so it is stored about 20 mins away right next to my 'stinkpot'. I'll probably rig it up anyway, but the convenience factor of just throwing the yaks on my car and hitting the road is one of the major reasons i got a yak in the first place.
thanks everybody for the feedback! i got a lot of good ideas from this thread. this site rocks.

I use one Malone carrier bolted directly to my factory rack, the other one on foam blocks. works great.
