I'm sorry for having to say such a dirty word, but I have finally come to grips with the fact that I need a better DIET! :frown:
Since returning from Iraq in November of 2008, I have put on 30 lbs and it is time for it to go.
First things first - I need to get back into my fitness routine.
Other than that, who has some good dieting tips? (besides eating less and moving around more)
The Army chow halls makes it incredibly easy to eat healthy, but I need to make some changes on the homefront now. Any healthy recipes or tips for eating right?

two things that helped me lose some weight: cut out the sodas and stop eating by 7:00 pm, if possible.
I'm still a BIG boy, but that helps keep the weight from coming back on from what I lost.

Kayak Fishing Everyday Diet...
That would really work well if I could only eat what I caught! I would drop the weight in no time.
Thanks BRB. I already almost never drink soft drinks, but I think I will have to cut down on another beverage ... Beer! As for the late eating, I am definitely guilty of that one.

Hey, I don't tell men not to drink beer. If they choose not to, well, I respect that, too.

www.fitday.com is a good tool to use for counting calories. It is free. I used it religiously for about two years. Portion control is a huge factor also. Measure your food before you put it in your plate. I was about 299 at my heaviest. Over the course of a year I lost 100 lbs. I got really serious about getting the weight off and took it one day at a time. If you mess up your eating today start over tomorrow. Don't let yesterday sabotage today. I ate about 6 times a day, drank a beer or two on the weekend and ate what I wanted in moderation. If you quit something cold turkey it usually is pretty tough to stay away from it, but if you know that friday you are gonna eat a bowl of ice cream you can generally stay away from it all week. I really could go on and on. Maybe I'll post some healthy recipes on the recipe section.

I only eat lunch and dinner. Two meals instead of three help me.

I quit eating fried fish a while ago. Here is a favorite dish of mine. I start out with a pot of water to boil some whole wheat angel hair pasta and some fresh onions (amount depends on amount of fish) sauteing in a little extra virgin fist cold pressed olive oil. Once the onions start turning translucent I will throw in some garlic and mushrooms and reduce the heat. Let that slow simmer while you dry the fillets and give them a good seasoning with slap ya mamma, Italian seasoning, white pepper, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. When the onions and company are almost done I'll toss in some capers with some of the juice then flip it a few times to mix it up and remove the mixture from the pan. Try to squeeze out as much of the olive oil as you can so you won't need to add much/any more to cook the fish. Get the fish situated and after the flip drop in the pasta (I like mine al dente). When the fish are nearly done, scoop the onions over top and cut the heat. Drain your pasta and plate it (you may need to add a little more fresh olive oil to get the pasta moist) then drop on the fish and onions shave up some fresh parmesan cheese or use the shredded stuff in the tub. A great side that is quick and can be done in concert with the rest of the production is a steamed bag of frozen California mix or some fresh broccoli and cauliflower or a spinach side salad with olive oil and balsamic vinegar - don't use iceberg lettuce because it sucks };-). I don't ever stick to the recipe 100%. If I have some Roma tomatoes laying around I'll add those to the mix a little before I put in the capers. The only thing you can do wrong in your kitchen is not use it.

Water! Drink a bottle of water before EVERY meal.
Get off of your duff. Do something. Be active.
That's what works for me. The hard part is getting off of my duff. Few of us drink enough water.
It's rare that I eat fried foods. I eat very little cheese. I stay away from obviously fatty foods for the most part though if I want to eat some I will, I just limit my portions.
All of this being said, the most I ever had to lose was 18 lbs. Thankfully I'm no expert at this stuff.

I'm a big boy too (currently 225) but at least my weight has stabilized and I drop a pound here or there. I follow the concepts in the book "The Three Hour Diet" which is not that complicated. Meals under 400 calories snacks under 200 (if you weigh over 200 lbs) eat every 3 hours until dinner your dinner desert is basically a hershey kiss.
If you follow the diet consistently you will lose a steady 2lbs a week (which is best for your body and prevents the starvation response from metabolism). Like I say if you follow it loosely you will at least stop the gain.
There is ultimately no way around eat less exercize more, but a kayak beats a gym anyday and muscle eats calories better than fat. Kayak once a week, mow my own grass, coach some kids in soccer, and I hit the gym at least once a week and I stay a little heavy but fit.

My girlfriend is doing this right now and it is working really well for her. I'm a little bit more active than her & i kind of half-ass the diet (i eat bread sometimes which is a big no-no. other than that i stick to it ok). we've each lost about 15lbs in 3.5 weeks. i agree with papawd that a lot of the recipes can be made more delicious with a little cajun tweaking, especially with fresh ingredients. that said, a lot of the south beach dishes that you find online are really good on their own.

I'm 17 days in to my South Beach diet, and so far I've lost about 16 lbs. You lose a lot in the first two weeks then it slows down to about 2-3 pounds a week from what I hear. 25 more to go. I'm doing p90x as my "move more" option.

I have hear a lot about the South Beach Diet; might give that a try. It looks like many of the foods on the good list are foods that I enjoy anyway, but I think the portion control will have to play a big roll.
I've read a ton about eating every three hours for a total of six meals a day, and I've even tried it a few times, but it seems almost impossible to stay with. Any suggestions on this? Do you carry your meals with you if you are on the run somewhere?
NorthShoreTiger, that sounds like an awesome recipe! I've done fish over rice before, but never tried the combo with pasta. I'll have to give it a shot (of course, gonna have to get some fish first!)
BAYOUfish, that's a huge accomplishment! I have a calorie counter app on my phone, but I haven't really used it much lately. I'll have to get back on that too.

Believe it or not, I've known people who can do this and still remain fit - must have lightning fast metabolism and good genetics going for 'em!

Not so much meals as meals and snacks and yes.
You are talking about simple things like a granola bar for your snacks. You can even have a kit kat bar every now and then. 3 hour comes with a recipe book and even a list of what you can eat at fast food joints. time for me to pull it back out.
Here's the key for me it's not complicated, I'm not counting carbs, protiens, etc. Eat a rubic's cube size carb, a deck of cards size protein, and roughly two dvd cases of vegs at your meals. He gives specific suggestions for lunch, and breakfast but you get the idea. Simple not scheming against your stomach, or your pancrease, or your etc.

Thanks Rev. That does help put it into prospective a little more. I worked on portion control today and I wasn't terribly hungry, although, I didn't get a chance to eat 6 times. I did realize how badly my eating habits had gone South while being extra conscious of it today.

You guys will find this amusing. I've lost between 25 and 40 lbs eating more cajun foods. I push fiber, fruit, and antioxidants too.
My blood work tells me I am a bit type 2 diabetic but I am in great shape medically at least from that.
My snickers bar at lunch is known to create dirty looks from those who know about the sugar thing but cafe food is grease x3.
