Kurt, that canoe is a work of art. It is too pretty to put in the water. You are a superior woodworker!

Kurt and I crossed paths while he was paddling that canoe in the Elmer's canal a couple of years ago.

Thanks. It doesn't look that good any more. Time to re-varnish it after about 7 or 8 years. I may even rebuild the decks. I have a trolling motor that I want to mount to the stern. A different shaped deck will make mounting easier.

It seems like I'm the only one on here with a sit-in. I bought it without doing much research (it was a good deal) before I found that everyone down here prefers sit-on-tops. so far I love it - i stay dry when the water is cold and I have plenty of storage. I have yet to try it out in a real chop though - i'll probably change my mind about it as soon as it takes on some water and doesn't drain.
anybody else use a sit-in down here? likes/dislikes?

I have a sit in that was my first kayak (Pungo 140). It's still my favorite boat to paddle, fast and eficient, and I like the phase 3 seat. It's just that for fishing, the Prowler is a much better all around platform for a variety of condititions. Plus, as my third kayak, the rigging (both personal customizing and stock) has evolved to just what I want.

teknickcull,
Like you and Kingfish, I started out in a SIK - Walden Scout. My son-in-law drives it now. They do indeed have the advantages you listed. I moved over to SOT's for one basic reason - fear of swamping / self bailing ability. Many SIK's make very nice calm water fishing platforms.

I fished in the lakes in California with a SIK. Never felt like I needed anything else until I came here and experienced some chop.

Yup, I actually prefer it for fresh water, but I rarely fish in fresh water.

Try a neoprene spray skirt for your SINK. All the water stays out, but of course, it's a little more comfortable in the cold weather. I used to paddle a sea kayak before I bought a canoe years ago. Everything has it's place. I do suggest you practice wet exit and re-entry with a paddle float in a nice warm swimming pool before venturing out too deep. I'd say the same for SOT riders and canoers, too. It is a MUST-HAVE skills.

Trolling Motor Ready to Go
For night or early morning fishing I have added led navigation lights on the front that run off my "deer feeder battery" that is stored in the front compartment along with my trolling motor battery. The trolling motor control switch and the switch for navigation lights are in front of my cup holder for easy reach.
I can pull the trolling motor off and have my rudder for tournaments on in about 5 minutes or less or pull the trolling motor off to deter theft in 20 seconds and take with me.
