My daughter has one of those Palm Pre phones thru Verizon. Does anyone know how to get it connected with my computer without having to pay $40 for some download? When I hook the usb cable from the phone to my computer my keyboard goes inop. I am running XP if that helps or makes a difference.
dang kid and her wanting to get rings tones and crap. lol

If I'm not mistaken, it should have come with a usb cable and the palm software package which is used to communicated between pc and Pre. I had a Pearl, so it could all be different, but that's how it worked for me.

If you don't have the software, think of your Pre as a mass storage drive. Just drag and drop files into the appropriate folder and you're done.

Your right Paulup, it should have come with a usb cable and the software. My wife had a palm pre for a while.

She got the usb cable, but not a software package. The problem comes when I hook the thing to my puter via the usb. My computer does not like it at all and actually makes my keyboard go kaput. The mouse will work, but that is it. I have never had this happen with anything that I have hooked to my puter. Usually just a new device message and then go from there.

Don't know what to tell you man, that is strange. Maybe one of the Computer Guru's on here can give you some advice on that one. I'm sure they will chime in with suggestions.

Not a guru but you might try downloading the pre software from the Palm site and then try it. Just a suggestion.

Make sure your usb drivers are up to date. I don't know what kind of pc you have, but nowadays it most likely has usb ports on the front, back and monitor. Might even have additional usb ports attached to pci slots. Use the ones on the back of the pc first, usually by the keyboard/mouse ports. Try every different port, i'm sure one will work. Its usually either a driver issue, or a peripheral that is incompatible with the phone causing conflict(IRQ). I'm no expert, so I'm sure someone else here can get to the root of your problem, but swapping ports will likely be the easy solution...

I'm not familiar with how the Pre syncs with your PC, since I have a Treo that uses the old Palm Desktop. WebOS is different. I'd recommend starting here: http://kb.palm.com/wps/portal/kb/na/pre/p100eww/verizon/home/page_en.html

There is a ton of information available on the site, but it's fairly well organized with decent tutorials. I bet your answer is there.

Definitely follow the other posters advice about downloading the software from palm's website, but that will only get you so far if your keyboard doesn't work when the device is connected.

As far as the keyboard goes - is it USB or PS/2? You can tell the difference by looking at the connector - if it is a round barrel-type connector it is PS/2, otherwise USB.

If it is USB, try moving it to a different USB port. If possible, try to move it to a completely different group of USB ports (in other words don't move it to the port right next to it. if it is plugged into the back of your computer, move it to the front. Windows XP will then be forced to redetect and reinstall it, then you can move it back. 9 times out of 10 this will fix a simple USB driver issue.)

If it is PS/2 (round-barrel connector), all you can really do it make sure that it is plugged in tightly. maybe unplug it, inspect the pins in the connector for corrosion and check that none are bent/broken, and plug it back in. It is a good idea to have your PC powered off when you're unplugging/plugging in your keyboard if it is this type (with USB this is not necessary).

Feel free to PM me if you need more help or have any questions.

Thank you guys. I never thought of using one of the ports in the back. I just used on of the usb ports in the front.

Wave I will look at that link in a bit, thanks.

Great suggestions all. I appreciate the information. Sorry I can generally be of only law enforcement help in return, lol. Well now I can also offer some suggestions if you need a roof replaced due to storm damage, but Raywolf is the guru there.
Thanks again
