The weekend started out at my aunt's pond in St. Francisville. I was tossing a green popper on the wal-mart fly fishing pole. I caught a few small bass and bream.

A bittersweet report...Went to the Mag to try and catch my first red on the fly rod. I did just that. I was throwing a larger popper to start off the morning. The redfish were busting everywhere. They were blowing up the popper but missing. I'm not kidding when I say around 20-30 reds went for it but missed throughout the morning. I'm gonna bring the fiance as a photographer next trip. I finally hooked a big one who took me on a nice ride. Somehow, some way after a lengthy battle he came off in the abundance of snot grass. I then switched to a weedless spoon and sight casted a 29 inch red. Towards the end of the battle, I was trying to lift the fish and the grass on the fly line up towards me, and in the process my brand new tfo snapped. :frown: (warranty) But, I still managed to land the bruiser.:buttrock: I'm going to have to practice a new method of landing fish with all that grass around.

Anyways, I guess it will be a little while until I get my rod back and do it again...unless I buy a backup:yes:

Caught on spinning gear.

That's a big arse red to be your first on the fly rod, sweet! TFO is pretty quick on the warranty returns, so you shouldn't be out too long. Great report, I look forward to seeing more, especially now that it's summer. And did I hear the word fiance? Congrats man!

NIce!! That grass is a mixed blessing. It clears up the water and provides cover for fish...but it can be a pain. Reds have an incredible ability to get unhooked in that grass..it's baffling. One thing that helps is setting the hook a few times by stripping in line hard. Let me know if you want to go soon...Saturday looks pretty good

Barret, let me check with the boss (fiance) first. I think she wanted to go furniture shopping or something crazy like that this weekend. I will definitely get back with you soon on that. But if I get the ok, i'm in!

Furniture stores are open at night and not at 6 a.m. Better set that tone early.

Great trip and nice pics!

Barret, I'm good to go. I need to pick up another rod at cabelas. Deciding between the crosswater or three forks. Fishtaco, do you still use a crosswater?

Yeah, I still use the Crosswater, it's not a bad rod at all. I like it better than the Cabela's Traditional I use to have in an 8wt. I have the Three Forks in a 3wt and it's a solid rod as well. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

If it was me and it was a backup rod, I'd look for whatever was the cheapest at Bass Pro or Cabela's. If you've got time Sierra Trading Post is a great place to get discount fly gear, just sign up for the Deal Flyer coupons.

I went and picked up the Three Forks. Not a bad price for a 4 piece rod.

carp, I saw this response way too late!! Did you end up going out?

-Depending on the weather, I'm taking the skiff out this weekend to sight fish. Would you like to join? I'm not sure where I'd be heading though...probably magnolia or myrtle grove or lafitte or delacroix....duck ponds etc.

we did okay last weekend

No worries, Barret. Bought the furniture Saturday. Actually just got in a little while ago fishing the Comite. Caught a few dink spots and some longears. Dropped the iphone in the drink taking pictures. :frown: I won't be fishing for a few weeks as I will be going home this weekend (Georgia, same place as fishtaco) and after that Destin. Saw your pics of the boat, that thing looks awesome!
