Catch

Sorry for the belated post. But if anyone is interested, and can make it tonight, the Red Stick Fly Fishers will be having their November meeting at the Wildlife and Fisheries building on Quail Drive. Time is 7:00pm.
Special guest speaker will be Lane Pelissier of Vermillion Bay Rod Company. Lane specializes in custom rod building. He will talk about techniques for rod building, selecting blanks, and also the Common Cents System used for evaluating fly rods. Some of his discussion will also pertain to casting and spinning rods, as the methods for those are almost identical to fly rod building.

Please post results. I've been religously using SG with all braid to mono/flouro knots for years. Never had knot failure, but maybe my uni/uni would hold w/o the SG

Finally, a Science Fair project that actually might be worth something in the real world.

I had a great time. The rod building information in the "common cents" presentation was great even if you just want to evaulate your current rods or a potential purchase. I also had the chance to spend some time casting with Catch after the meeting. Thanks again Catch looking forward to Fly fishing 101 in January.

Chis........ BRING our wife too. We usually have a couple wives that attend - mostly to "show up" their husbands it seems like. It's definitely wife and kid friendly.

Hey guys here's a link to a good read on blank characteristics. Some of it is a bit technical but good stuff nonetheless. http://www.rodbuildingtutorials.com/Misc.%20Tutorials/Blanks%20Characturistics%20by%20Emory%20Harry.pdf

Hey Lane,
I dug out one of my old books on rodbuilding a couple nights ago. I was reading about a blank called an "apogee" blank. It doesn't seem to ever really have taken off though. THe picture showed that author bending a tip into an S curve. Any thought on that stuff?

I've never heard of an "apogee " blank but sounds like a Dorber Ultrawave. Interesting concept. I'd like to try one out. They put a ridiculous amount of guides on them which I don't like. Some guy out there touts how good they are on various ff sites. The discussion gets heated and the threads get closed. May be good, who knows.

Here a little of what I found: It was a Dale Clemons item
AD: While we are on the subject of blanks, one of the things that
interested me that I never had the opportunity to experience was
that line of solid tipped blanks that Clemens sold for a while.
DC: Yes, the Apogee. Fantastic! The plant that made those
very, very thin tips for us in Japan burned down, and we
were never able to find a replacement. We used a number
of people’s technology to join the short, thin, solid tip to
regular hollow graphite to make the rod’s tip section while
maintaining a smooth dynamic transition.
The rest of the rod was made for us by Gary Loomis,
and Gary tried making the tiny tips, but it just was not economically
feasible for him, or us, to do so. It was definitely
a product for the custom builder and not a finished rod
company who wanted to sell rods for each line weight.
We sold a lot of them, but not in the huge numbers needed
for the tooling costs. The Japanese company had originally
done their tooling with another purpose in mind. Then
we came across them and they were failing in the other
venture. We said “Could you do this for us?” and the
Japanese looked into it and said “Yes.” Personally, I think
the blanks are fantastic! A lot of people still do not believe
that you can build a flyrod that will cast a very wide range
of fly line weights, but you can.

That was an Andy Dear quote right?

I'm not sure. Apparently the beauty of the tip was that it was stable enough to allow a single rod to effectively quote several different weights of lines.
