Last night, I started making my son a vise for Christmas. So far, I have the base finished. Here are a few pictures.

I started by turning the brass mounting point for the vise. In the photo, I am drilling the end for a 3/8" shaft. the bottom has already been drilled and tapped for a 1/4" screw that will attach the brass piece to the wood base.

I'm using a piece of blood wood for the base. I'm at a stopping point until the square brass rod and delrin I bought on ebay arrives.

Kurt's a HACK! You want to see talent.......... try doing what he does with equipment from Harbor Freight. Not THATS talent, LOL.

Actually, the crappy insert tooling I'm using on my lathe is from HF. I need something better, just haven't spent the money.

Steve, my son is 7.

Made a few more parts tonight. I need to buy a 23/64 drill bit before I can continue.

I haven't worked on the vise in over a week, but this is where I left off. I think it is plenty stout.

I didn't think about it but I could have brought you the drill bit last night if you hadn't bought it yet.

I was able to borrow one. I tried to buy one, but Grainger didn't have it in stock. Thanks anyway.

Sunday, I finished milling the slot for the jaws and tonight I tapped one of the jaws so that it can be mounted to the vise. I'm calling it finished except for polishing and rounding over the edges of one of the parts.

Real nice, but I would expect nothing less from your shop. I want to try my hand at metal work but need a bigger shop for the tools.

That is incredible, that is one blessed kid to have a dad like you to put in all that work.

I know it's not important, but I am just curious, apart from design, how many man hours on the fabrication?

Thanks, guys. Ken, it didn't take very long. Hard to say how long as I didn't keep track. I worked on it an hour here and an hour there. If I had to guess, I'd say 10-15 hours. I was making things up as I went along, so a lot of that time was deciding on what to do next. I was copying my Patriot vise for the most part. I didn't come up with the design other than making another brand of vise's jaws work. I made a mistake or two while building it, so I'll know what to do different the next time. There are a few parts that I will likely rebuild.

You always impress with every thing you build. I can only guess what your shop must have in it. Keep the projects coming it's fun to watch.

Do you build "for sale" vices?
