That's a great kayak for the price.

I have a pelican castaway 116 and while I can stand in it for short spurts, it's really not recommended. That boat has been passed down to my 8 year old son. He could probably dance a jig in it. My personal opinion is that I wouldn't go with any boat less than 12'. The Pelican doesn't track very well and is a pretty wet ride for me at 185#. Even with scupper plugs in, I still end up getting wet. Also, there have been some reports of the seals between the two halves not sealing very well. I would usually get a pretty good bit of water in the hull every time I took that yak out.

For the difference in price, I would go with the Perception Pescador 12 in a heartbeat over the Pelican and also would probably steer away from the 10' model. Not that it doesn't have it's place. Just think you get a little more for your money with the 12 footer.

The Pescador is a great yak if you are looking to start with a new kayak. However, I just purchased a Heritage Redfish 12 for $300. Check out Craigslist, that's your best bet. It really paid off for me.

Here's a good deal as well...

http://www.bckfc.org/showthread.php?6448-Tarpon-140-FS-(Green)

Being a 2008 model, I would think this is basically the 14' version of the Pescador 12 since that is a re-branded Tarpon 120. Great kayak and could probably cover more water with the longer yak. It will track much better, and handle some of the rougher water you might encounter from time to time much better.

The Ride is a great boat and the Tarpon's are also very stable.

Watch Craiglist and this site, LKFC and maybe see what Backpacker and Massy's have as demo boats. Bobby Gros may still have some demo boats.

I would also suggest the perception pescador 12' kayak. Great buy for a new yak. Or you can jump on a used yak...but you have to buy as soon as you see it. Good deals dont last long.

PigInWater??? Is this razoryak with a new username trying to start fresh?:hide:

All above the above +

Buying a used boat can be the smartest way for someone to enter the kayak-fishing world. If it turns out to not be your "thing" you can usually recoup most of your investment when you re-sell it.

Stability is usually over-rated by beginners. At your size you shouldn't have any problems with any of the above mentioned boats. Just remember... keep your head in the boat (don't lean over so far that your head is beyond the side of the kayak) and when you hook a bigun, keep the tip of the rod pointed toward the front of the boat.

PFD - wear it, especially in the cool months. (This message brought to you by the classroom safety monitor.)

Look for a "quality" used boat and save some money. You should be able to get a good "paddle" boat for between 400 and 600 easily.
Demo as many as you can before you buy anything.
