So I have several old spoons laying around that I have been playing with. I have been trying to find a high gloss paint to refurbish them to their original luster and shine. I have not yet been able to find an off the shelf aerosol (most desired) that will do the job.

Well, yesterday I went to rite aid and picked up an assortment of "wet and wild" fingernail polishes. So far I have coated one weedless spoon with a purple tone, very glittery polish. Holding the lure in the sunlight after four coats and the reflection is impressive. Not sure how well it will fare in the water but will be getting it wet this Wednesday.

Maybe I will catch some effeminate fish.

Good to know you're getting a little R&R for a change. If you know anybody in the chrome plating industry, you could probably have them dipped for free.

Look into fly fishing materials. Some type of heavy duty thin epoxy might keep your paint job on longer than one trip. Think fly fishing spoons' type coating.

Hell, paint 'em purple and gold and sell them up here in Baton Rouge for a killing. They buy ANYTHING with purple or gold in it.

Next project is gold leaf. I am also playing with the idea of rehabing trailers for kayak's. There's nothing like having a good yak trailer, with a title. As long as I can get them cheap enough to at least get my money back out of them it would be a fun hobby for me and the boys.

After painting with fingernail polish go the extra mile. Get matching 4" high heeled shoes.

Oh wait... wrong forum.

I meant to say, put a couple of coats of "Hard as Nails" on them.

Painting works "OK." I've done it before and the painted ones will catch fish. I was lucky enough to find a gold glittery nail polish.

oooh. brainstorm. How about reflective fishing lure decals/stickers. I've seen 'eye' stickers at Bass Pro by the lure making/repair stuff. You could cut to shape, slightly smaller than the spoon. Then, you could put a clear epoxy coat over the sticker. Guaranteed shiny as hell kinda like the diamond reflective stuff used on tractor trailer safety reflectors. OR how could you use mylar in the process?

Good idea on the yak trailer. One of my goals this summer is to learn how to weld. Still looking into MiG or flux for the first welder. Both have their advantages.

Many of us old farts may recall that sticker material as "space tape." It was a big deal when it first came out!

holographic is the key word

Like George Carlin sorta said "Old Farts get trapped in sofa cushions." If you ain't trapped inside one, I guess you ain't an old fart. Besides, old farts don't paddle fish, they don't fish, just tell tall tale fishing stories.

I'm thinking of trying to polish spoons using mildly abrasive psste and/or tarnish remover like Tarnex (sp?) and turtle wax buffed on using a dremel. At that point, I guess starting from a sheet of metal and stamping might be easier and less complicated. Then a tack weld to hold the hook on. If you haven't figured out I was kidding yet. Well...........

I hate throwing them away when they get rusty but I don't really want to invest a huge amount of time to get spoons bright and shiny.

Q-tip, a few drops of water and some ashes. Takes about 60-90 seconds per spoon. No big deal.

I believe Where Y'ak has another solution. He uses the cheaper spoons and simply considers them as being something close to disposable.

I still hate throwing away the ones I catch fish on alot. Even if I can get a duplicate. I have 2 spoons someone gave me from Houma that I can't find the brand sold anywhere. And these bad boys catch reds!

Maybe I'll save a bunch of old ones and make a wind chime or something.

Call me tacky, but that doesn't sound like a bad idea.

only men, ahem, fisher-men would appreciate something like that. I guess it would be cool at a fishing camp. My wife would just roll her eyes and say "get that thing outa here." LOL

One guy's camp I know has a bent hook collection on a pegboard of gold spoons that were bent by big reds outa there. He's real popular come summer time, as you'd guess.

Good use for old mono fishing line, too. the wind chime thing.
