I would like to try Kayak fishing. Think it would be fun and much less expensive than trailering a boat.
Here is my issue: I know my five year old son will want to go with me. Are the double kayaks a lot of trouble. Are they too cumbersome? Anyone have a recommendation on a brand?
Thanks,
Dan

I see some tandem kayaks that are rigged for single anglers on the web on occasion. I have personally seen a Father and his son fishing from a yak on the Florida coast. I think they had a Malibu Tandem. If your son is young, malibu also has the gator hatch on some of their kayaks. The gator hatch has a molded in seat for small kids to sit on the forward hatch lid. I think tandems give up some rear well storage but have seen some nice ones from Wilderness Systems, Ocean kayak, and Malibu. RTM has a nice tandem also I think.

The OK Malibu 2 seems to be really popular with the sharkers fishing the surf for running baits and BTB solo, but has the added advantage of being a tandem. Unless he is a really big 5 year old, most yaks can handle him sitting in the rear deck or front hatch area, of course, this will only be a viable option for a short time as we all know how fast kids grow.

The tandems that Native makes have removable seats. I have the Magic in the tandem. When my grandson fishes with me, 2 seats. I remove his seat when I fish alone.

I have the Native Ultimate tandem. It works great for me and the kids. I dont even put in the front seat when fishing with my 5 year old. He fits up front and leans on the bar. It is not a sit on top like most others. But the sides of the kayak might be a good thing for kids. It gives them a sense on security. It does have its downfalls though with not having scupper holes. The magics are great too. A buddy I work with bought a perception tribe 13.5 that can be set up as tandem for around 600-700 dollars. Backpacker carries those and might bring them to Family Day. You should bring your son and check them out. It will be August 6th.

Actually, it will be in between Baton Rouge and New Orleans at the St. James Boat Club. See the link provided above by tugowar! There is a covered pavilion, water, electricity, a launch for the yaks and plenty of fun on the water! Fun will be had by all!!!!
