Basically it allows you to see new new posts without logging in to the forum. I use Google Reader to keep up with several forums and lots of blogs that I am interested in when I'm away from home. There are programs that run on your desktop as well such as Feed Demon. I'm replying to this message through Feed Demon (http://www.newsgator.com/Individuals/FeedDemon/Default.aspx) right now without even opening a browser and coming to the site.

If you only go to a few places on the net, you don't really need it. I follow about 30 different sites every day so it really saves a lot of time to be about to see what is new quickly without having to wade through the site.

There are also RSS apps for smart phones that will show you just the new posts from the forum without having to log in.
