When you leave your yaks on your vehicles or on your trailers while you spend the night in a motel/housing for PPVII, how or what would you recommend to secure them.

I realize that anything you do is only deter or slow down a determined thief, but what is a good and not so expensive way to secure your yaks while you are away from it?

Hope this makes sense...

I run a bike locking cable through a scupper hole and then through a tie-down in my truck bed. These cables are available in different lengths at Lowe's/Home Depot for $12-$25. My 15' cable allows me to lock up to 3 yaks together...

I also lock them in my backyard.

Same as Reel Rebel. I use the thickest cable that has a loop that will fit through my scuppers and I only use good locks that leave virtually no room for someone to cut.

Last but not least, there's a large empty holster on my dashboard that serves as a warning to a potential thief. ;)

I use the cable with a big lock as well. Nothing some bolt cutters won’t get through, but it keeps the honest people honest.

Bolt cutters work on lock shanks and chains, but have you ever tried to use them on multi-stran cable? It's more like knawing through them and it takes a bit more time. That's why I try to stay away from pad locks and use the cable locks with the built in lock mechanism. I use an additional cable wth the loops on it's end if I need more length. I can just pass the loops through the Gorilla locks cable and use it's intergral lock setup. It's just something more to slow down a thief.

+ one on that issue.

two thick cable bike locks (one on each side) run around the pillar between the front and back doors. You can't even budge the canoe once I lock it down. Like y'all said, all this just slows down the thief that really wants your stuff. The locks are inside the vehicle, too. Still, I hardly sleep thinking about it.

Once, I brought the canoe into the motel room (it was a suite) when I forgot my locks. The wife wasn't too happy with that move. Luckily, it was only one night. Slept like a baby. LOL.

How bad is the crime down there as far as theft goes?? Let's say from Golden Meadow to Fourchon. Anybody know?

I do not think it is bad at all. I have had a camp down there for about 6-7 years and the only thing that I have had taken (in the very beginning) was a sat dish off a pole. Since then, nothing. We leave boats and all kind of other stuff in our trailer park with no problems. But, it is always smart to be on the safe side and lock the yak up. I also agree the kind with the lock built in is the best. I have tried to cut those with bolt cutters and it almost can not be done.

I like a Glocking system instead of a locking system. As the crook leaves with my yak I prefer to Glock them down.

Just make sure he is looking at you instead of walking away! My concealed permit expired and I need to renew but I like your approach.....

Run this through the scupper. I like that it can be tightened down and the lock is included so I don't have to worry about forgetting it at home.

Just slap one of these on the side of your yak ... shouldn't have any problems.
