Hi...I'm new here and looking to start fishing out of a kayak. As much as I love doing research on the internet, I also dislike it. There is way to much information out there and one can become overloaded. I am 5'10 160lbs and looking for a kayak that is safe and stabile. Anyone have any suggestions? I am looking to spend between 700-1000 on a new setup or used one in good shape. But before I buy anything, I need help with recommendations etc. I live close to New Orleans.

First recommendation is come to our 2nd Annual Family Day coming up on August 6th at the St. James Boat club. BackPacker will be there with a whole trailer full of kayaks for anyone and everyone to try out. In addition, some members will be bringing their yaks to let people try as well and show some rigging on yaks they have done. That is the first thing you will hear is demo, demo and then demo. You will then have first hand research on what brand works with your body build and which hull design works for you as well as paddle lengths. Great opportunity to pick a lot of brains with questions...

Price wise you are in a good range and should be able to find something that will work for you.

Hope to see you at Family Day for a ride or two....

As what Steve said, demo, demo, demo, demo and when you are tired demo some more.
Determine what your use will be fishing inside, marsh, open or pictures, exercise, that will help decide what is needed. Then demo what you think you want. All of the dealers will demo any of the boats they handle.
July 23 will be an Outcast tourney in Leeville for fishing yaks if that is of any interest to you.

Family day will be great because you will be able to see an unrigged demo as well as some rigged boats. Pay attention to what the guys & gals have done to customize their yak's as you will be interested in doing it yourself in the future. Your price range will surely land you a quality boat but do try before you buy.
Two other pieces of advise, element54 will NOT give you fishing pointers even if you ask and TOC is scary when he wears plaid shorts. :). Welcome to the addiction!!!

Do you know what kind they will have out there? Is that the boat club off of highway 61? As of today, I am hoping to make it out there, but with work sometimes things come up. For the time being, what are some of the better boats for starters? I can start doing research on those specific ones.

If you can make it to family day bring your kids if you have any. We will have food, drinks, kids can fish and will have place for the kids to play. All FREE of course.

Does anyone have any reports on the Hurricane Phoenix 140 or the Tarpon 140? They seem to stick out a lot(besides the Hobie's). I plan on attending on the 6th, but my need to research and read reviews are getting the best of me.
