LDWF Secretary Robert Barham announced the closure of both recreational and commercial fishing in Zone 1, excluding the coastal boundaries of Lake Borgne, Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurapas. This closure will take place at 6 p.m. this evening. The Deepwater Horizon drilling rig accident has resulted in a significant release of oil into the offshore waters of southeast Louisiana. Oil has the potential to impact fish and other aquatic life in portions of Louisiana's coastal waters.

"I signed this emergency closure today as a proactive effort to prevent any oil-tainted fish, shrimp or crab from being caught and thus consumed," said LDWF Secretary Robert Barham. "Now is the time to act as we see what the impacts may be to Louisiana's fragile ecosystems."

I know, I know, never discuss religion or politics BUT. Tomorrow is Sunday and for those of us (like me) who don't go often enough, and for those who are there every Sunday, lets all pray for a miracle that this well head can be shut down sooner rather than later.

with this Zone 2 closure, can we expect a fishing closure like they did with Zone 1?

Note that the LA state water fishing closure includes all the eastern shoreline and some of Lake Borne's shoreline, but leaves Lake Catherine, the Rigolets and Lake Pontchartrain open as of now. Looks like da' Pen is captured in the closed area to me.

As far as I know recreational fishing remains open in Zone 2 for now. The special shrimp season opened so that shrimpers could harvest the white shrimp that were inshore. The white shrimp have moved out and the brown shrimp that have moved in are too small to be marketable so they closed it.

Oyster harvesting has closed in various zones and just to add to the confusion, the oyster zone maps are different from the shrimp zone maps.

My info just comes from the departments website here: http://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/

The most recent article addressing recreational fishing and the closed area can be found here: http://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/news/?id=1799
That article includes a map of the closed are in Zone 1. That closed area is closed to all harvest - recreational, commercial, shrimping, oyster harvesting, etc...
