Thinking about fishing on the Gulf side of Grand Isle. Whenever I surf fish there, the birds are diving about another 20ft from my max casting range.
How about the current around the jettys? What to watch out for? Riptides? Good place to fish?
Any other tips?
Thanks in advance.

Watch out for undertow, never go out past your waist! A few weeks ago, I walked out along the rocks at the far end of the beach in the camp ground. At low tide, I was able to wade in about 20 yards and cast into Barataria Pass. At a falling tide I caught lots of 27+ inch reds. At a slack tide, only hard heads. I've also read stories from members of this club putting their kayaks in next to the old bridge and hooking onto Crevelle Jack.

Also, never tie a stringer of fish to your belt loop! I had a friend of mine almost disappear out there after a shark came by and grabbed his stringer. The only thing that saved him was that his belt loop broke. Needless to say, HE DON'T DO THAT NO MORE!!!

Try the beach side jetties forming the eastern side of caminada...can launch on the beach and paddle to the jetties...boats usually congregate their in the morning/evening....would only recommend going in calmer seas...otherwise, too risky....OR you can just troll up and down beach, like the sharks do...

If you need another 20 feet of casting...get a longer rod, and a casting reel that does not have a level wind on it. There's a guy in Corpus Christi I buy a lot of surf fishing gear from at http://www.breakawayusa.com
His name is Nick Meyers. Look for an Omega 10.6 and put a Daiwa Sealine SHA20 on it. Fill that monkey with 10 or 15 pound test mono, and with a 2 oz. hopkins or other spoon...you shoudl be knocking down 100+ yards EASILY. I have about 8 different rods I take with me to the surf...and after a close encounter with about a 5 foot blacktip...I don't go past the first bar anymore. My longest casting rod is a Breakaway HDX (13') with a sealine 30X...i can knock down 120+ yards with no wind. I also have a 9' Tica TC2 casting rod with a Daiwa Luna 300 on it...with a 2 oz. Gator spoon...I can fling it about 100 yards all day long. I can also throw topwaters, crank baits, and live and dead bait.
If you want to paddle BTB (Beyond the breakers)...go to texaskayakfishermen.com...they have an entire section on how to rig for that...but most importantly...know how to get back in your yak in deep water...wear your PFD...and don't go alone.

Last year, guys were putting a ribbon fish behind their yaks and catching kings about 75 yards off the beach in South Texas. Talk about a sleigh ride!
