View Full Version : Is this normal?

I got some water splashed into my hull while plowing through the whitecaps in Yellow Cotton Bay Sunday. The only thing I have stored in my hull is a folded up rain jacket. I pulled it out to drain the water and I found these little plastic shavings stuck to it. They are the same color as my hull so it would seem that they came from the hull. Is this a normal by-product of the manufacturing process? Or is it something I should be concerned about?

Is the picture blurry or am I drinking too much again?
Me think it's nothing to worry with - unless you see lots of holes in your hull. Probably shavings from manufacturing process.

They're probably leftover from the installing of padeyes and any other accessories that come on the boat from the factory, which require putting holes in the hull.

I was ganna say the same thing that fishtaco suggested.
Fast forward to about half way to see how they cut out the hatches and install hardware.

I've bought 4 different kayaks. Found shavings and pieces in all of them.

Water in the hull, red little cylinders. It's either red fish eggs or red fish turds, either way it's good luck.....

The pictures looked fine to me when I took them...but I was drunk then.
I am convinced it is one of these:

Keep any plastic pieces ya'll find in your new kayaks. It makes it easier when plastic welding repairs are needed. I keep a jar full of different colored plastics and add to it whenever I drill a hole. (every little bit helps)
I also found out that if you contact the manufacturer of your kayak and give them your hull id number, most will send you some plastic for welding repairs. That way you get the same "die lot."

In hindsight I should have kept the plastic I cut out for my rod holders. :(

I even keep the little curls that come out when I drill a hole in the yak.
