The Red Stick Fly Fishers will hold their 20th annual "Red Stick Day" Fly Fishing Festival.
Date: Saturday, March 5, 2011
Time: 8:30am to 3:30pm
Location: LDWF Waddill Outdoors Center, 4142 N. Flannery, Baton Rouge
Cost: FREE
This event features seminars, casting instruction, fly tying demos, kayak and canoe tryouts, rod and tackle exhibitors, food, raffle items, and much more.
Those new to the sport will want to attend the “Fly Fishing Basics” session at 9:00am, and later, get individual casting instruction from one of the “Casting Coaches”.
For those interested in the exciting sport of canoe and kayak fishing, there’ll be an opportunity to test ride different models exhibited by Backpacker of Baton Rouge, including the Freedom Hawk 12, WS Commander, and new models Kajun Kayak and Jackson Coosa, among others.
Refreshments are free, and a jambalaya lunch is available for $5. There will also be a raffle featuring numerous fly fishing items and accessories to help raise funds for the club’s local conservation and outreach projects.
Featured guest is Gary Borger, one of the world's foremost fly fishing educators. A biology professor at the University of Wisconsin, Gary began writing about the sport in the late 60s. Pioneering how-to videos in the mid-1970s, he has produced over 17 video titles, many of which remain unsurpassed, and written seven books on subjects such as casting, fly tying, trout fishing and fish behavior and perception. Gary also set many of the standards for fly-casting skills as a longtime member of the FFF Casting Board of Governors. He has been recognized for his many contributions to conservation and education.
