I know we have some very smart riggers in this club, so here is my question.
I am looking to redo/add to my kayak trailer. Need some ideas on how to transport my rods and paddles on my trailer or on my Xterra. I would like to transport them without taking them apart. So please post any pictures of any ideas you have

these work great for spinning rods.

found them at Academy for 20 or 25 bucks. They are lockable so it secures the rod an the attached reel as long as the turnable part of the reel seat is near the butt end of the rod.

I carry mine upright in rod holders bolted to my tool box. My paddle is two-piece so I break it down and carry it in the locking tool box along with pedals, seat and other gear.
I stretch a bungee cord(s) to keep the rods from "jumping" out while traveling. The only thing is that the rods are not locked for those trips into Wally World of the Huddle House. However, I'm working on a method to lock them with a small piece of stainless cable. It won't keep them totally theft proof, by may prevent the casual snatch and grab thief from just pulling them out and running away.

Don't have pictures of the storage but mine go under the yaks between the runners and are held down with bungee cord. Have to remove the yaks to see them.

Nothing fancy here. I just stick them in the back of the jeep and let them stick out about a foot. I use a light bungee to hold the ends in place so they don't wiggle and bounce all over the place. I have bought some of the materials I need to turn my trailer into a Yak hauler but just haven't found the time to actually get around to it. I have no pressing need since all I am hauling is one 11'3" yak on it so some foam and a couple straps is all that is necessary for now. For rod holders I would suggest getting something that is actually built for rods like those foam partition things that are meant for wall mounting.

A couple of those on your trailer would probably be perfect.
Or you could do like Revredfish.
I saw that he had a sweet looking rod deal in his Xterra. Maybe he will chime in with a couple pics. From what I could see it was a notched piece of wood that was mounted to the roof inside the rear of his Xterra. Then in the front there was another bar that the ends of the rods sat into. I guess you would need pics to get the full idea.

here's my trailer build album: http://www.bckfc.org/album.php?albumid=35
I use a clothing rack over the back seat and a rope with a plastic sleeve in the back to creat a ceiling rack for my rods inside my XTERRA I'll try to get pictures. But the idea of storing them under the kayaks is interesting and I'll be looking into that.

Rev, it works well for me. If you look at the picture of the back of my trailer, the 2x4s support the rods and I put the reels just in front of the rear brace. Have a short piece of bungee cord that hooks between 2 small hooks to keep them from jumping around. I will get some better pictures if you want me to. Just let me know.

All of these are great ideas. I like the way Rev uses the inside of the Xterra cab. I will try this for Friday and see if I like it, but I do want to build/add something to my trailer for life jackets, tackle boxes, rods and paddles.

truck bed tool boxes are great for holding kayak gear and can usually be found pretty cheap on craigslist

You could just leave your paddles together and on your kayak with your paddle keeper. Thats what I do. It wont go anywhere.

I strap the paddles right on the kayak on the trailer. The problem with the internal rod storage is that sitting in the back seat becomes very uncomfortable (remember xterras have the raised rear seat).

It's clear as a bell. My rgi is a little different so I have to think about it some more but I think I've got a handle on it. I was going to use that space for strapping gear bags but that is less necessary than the rods. I'm also thinking about creating a rod rack above the kayaks. Have to think about it some more. What I have works but when I take three folks it's a problem.

Good thing I don't ride in the back. lol. I will build something for the trailer. I have a 6'8 piece of 12" pvc pipe. I may close the ends and strap that to the trailer. Sort of like what "slipry" did here:

I just started this past weekend on a trailer build I will post later when completed. As for storage of life jackets etc. i have been looking at this lockable black box at Lowe's. It is in the toolbox area and runs about $60 bucks. Pretty big with lots of storage area but cant remember actual deminsions. Also had a smaller one for about $30.
