View Full Version : Anchor trolley system
Just wanted some advice from anyone that has installed an anchor trolley system. I have a ocean kayak 13 prowler. I am planning on running the system from the handle to the back of my kayak. My real question is without having a back hatch I won't be able to secure the clamp with a nut on the back side. What should I do instead? Thanks for any help.

well nuts have always worked well for me.
Thanks. After doing a little more research looks like I will just use some pop rivets. Another quick question. I've seen some videos where they install a cleat on the top side of the yak. Is that a necessity or just something a little extra for an extra tie down?

On all the prowlers I have seen there is a spot in the rear of the rear well that you can put a round hatch. Academy has them for about $10 and they are easy to install. I put one on my Big Game to mount my trolling motor.

I posted up a tutorial on the old forums for attaching the rear deck loop for the anchor trolly. You could look it up if intetereted. Well nuts have brought me nothing but trouble. The problem with pop rivets is that they are not exactly waterproof. You might want to figure out a way to waterproof the intallation. I use a deck loop to secure my anchor line. YAL's suggested highwayman's hitch works like a charm and no cleat to clutter up your deck.
I have put cleats on my yaks and have used them for a variety of things. I have not had a problem using stainless screws in mounting my anchor trolly. I use some waterproof glue to help hold the eyelet gizmos and provide for a seal around the holes. They really do not get that much weight on them to really be a problem with pulling out.

If you are going to use rivets, these are the rivets to use.

If you are worried about them not being waterproof a dab of goop takes care of that problem.
Thanks for all the help everyone. Just trying to get my preliminary plans together. Won't be able to get this project started until next week. What size hole should I drill for the rivets? I've heard 3/16" will do.

Voss,
I went cheap with my prowler mounts, but they work. The left side I had to nut and bolt them and on the right I used the mounts that were already there. They don't go from front to rear, but they work just fine for me. If you drill remember to seal the holes. I got just about everything needed at Homedepot.

I used pop rivets on mine. Works fine. I just put some marine silicone in all of the holes and made sure they were well above the water line. It's pretty easy to do. I'd let you borrow a rivet gun if you don't have one, but I don't know when you are coming back to NO.
