That should be a # 7-8 rod. You should try loading it with #7 first and maybe have a backup reel with the #8 weight line, too. I rarely overload my flyrods although I understand the potential benefits.

Definitely need backing no matter what you fish. It makes it much easier to wind. Depending upon your reel, you can use it for both, as long as you take care of it. Most click pawls are horrible brakes but you can learn to palm the reel very quickly. Large arbor reels with reel drags are best but I never buy the super expensive stuff and have a great time when I fish. You can use that set up for anything from redfish down to bream. All you'd really need to do is change the leader depending upon your target. Works for me. I own a 7 weight and a 10 weight for the big reds and hopes and dreams of bigger fish. Hardest things to learn to throw are the weighted flies.

I know there are tons of other brands, but I've never gone wrong with any Scientific Anglers dacron backing, flylines or leaders. Best thing to buy for our kind of fishing is a weight-forward floating line. Easy to cast and best to learn from at first. Later, when you fish winter, you might want to look into a sinking tip line for deeper presentations unless you bass fish regularly then by all means buy one and learn to use it too.
This is a good book for beginners. One of many in the library.

jonalford, the Martin CC68c is graphite composite, so it will have a slower action than what is normally considered for saltwater rods. On a calm day or with just a wisp of wind, shouldn't be a problem. It's when the winds blowing over 10kts that a fast action rod has a definite advantage.
