Registration will be up after the Minimalist challenge. As per tradition and my work schedule!

Kid's division is currently undecided I will have to talk to the board, review the polling data, and if supported find a sponsor (likely not a problem) for a decent prize to make it worthwhile.

And another thing - keep your suggestions coming - so far I've gotten about 5 ideas from club members. 4 have become sponsors and one (yeti coolers) said get in touch next year. Those are pretty good odds. We have enough for prizes at pp8 but not enough for the raffle, then we have to get moving for FnT.

How did one guy ever do all of this? - I think we all need to give a ton of love to previous single man TD's!

Also thanks to awesome sponsors!

I've never seen such a collection of sponsors for a kayak or motorboat competition before. Look at the companies that want to get into sponsorship. I've seen plenty of brands on that page that I know our members use. That's a lot of doors to knock on, Rev.

Perhaps Columbia and/or Magellan. I thought of it after seeing the Columbia logo on the Jax site.

In the past have we gotten the radios, fish finders, etc from some of our sponsors such as Academy or other store? Would the manufacturer perhaps donate directly to us?

And since you are asking for suggestions, lol, what about some of the local eatin joints? Thinking a coupon for raffle stuff.

It may have already been coverd by you and/or Denis but have any of the adult beverage type folks been contacted for a sampling of their frosty products?

We should be conversing with their groups about how they handled growth of the club and tourneys. Like it or not, we growin'.

We should be conversing with their groups about how they handled growth of the club and tourneys. Like it or not, we growin'.

We are! I'm not being defensive but I get a lot of PM's about this so let me just comment for everyone to know. First tefishmaster, glwlsu, and Branch Office (President, VP, and Secretary) spent a good bit of the last year getting the club on a firm foundation again. Then they turned their attention to the future. I like to think all the new officers jumped right in with that vision. First we want to solidify our product, simultaneously we are studying how to advance it. In the works right now: club brochures, flyers, sponorship schedules, new sponsors, new tourneys, and much more. Where Y'ak has added his accumen for the press and I believe that is going to be as important as all the other things we do combined. But all this will take time with a volunteer leadership scattered across the state.

We are requesting volunteers in advance more and more to run things, some requests you see on the forum, and a number get their arms wrung in private - you know who you are! Keep the ideas coming but we don't want you to be anxious that your board of directors does not see the need for measured, and considered growth. I've already learned that despite our surprising and excellent growth rate we are still not the big boy on the block, Tourney's in Florida and Texas are still much larger than our own.

Pretty soon the Tournament Committee will be meeting to talk about this very subject, and Gairi has been in contact with leaders of the other major tourneys across the coast, we have folks with years of experience running other types of tourneys, and we have some good ole kayak fishermen coming together. It's going to be a great year.

Choupique
01-24-2011, 08:25 AM
Almost every other tournament that draws over 150 is near a metropolitan area (Jax, Jamaica Bay, La Jolla) with facilities to help pull off a big event. The only thing we could ever do like that would be in N.O. with folks driving to fish that makes it less attractive to have to drive, but the potential to be bigger is there. Our tournaments are a great size IMO.

I can see it now - driving into the Superdome for weigh ins with ESPN there to capture the whole thing!

Where Y'ak?
01-24-2011, 08:58 AM
Note that the Jax Classic is not a club event. The tourney and the website are privately owned. The tournament gives a substantial amount of their profits to a charity each year. I'm just noting that the difference is we are a club and JAX is a business.

Cobia 1

Rev,
You are correct in that controlled growth is very important. This year will be exciting in that most clubs in the area are growing reflecting the popularity of the sport. I am sure we will have our headaches this year, but the governing body is sharp enough to use this inforamtion for the future.
Remember guys, the members are the club and it is up toyou to help in any way you can.

Marshworks (http://www.marsh-works.com/) is back in again! Thanks limestone cowboy!

Excellent addition.

Regarding one of my previous posts, I do hope it was read with a grain of salt. I was not aware that the Jax event was not a club event. I imagine it started that way. I wonder how those guys feel now about the size of it.

I worry about us getting too big. Of course I have no idea what "too big" means in actual numbers. I like it that both PP and FNT have a "club" feel as opposed to a "professional" feel. My guess is that many of our members and attendees feel the same. Much discusion was generated at the end of last year regarding cooking ourselves or catering. Easy for me to say since I am not on the cooking team (but am on the cleaning team), but I like the atmosphere generated by cooking ourselves.

I'll reserve my other comments regarding growth, etc for another time and forum since I don't think Rev began this thread with that in mind.

Again, great job guys. If I can help let me know how/when/etc.

I have faith and confidence in our leadership. Where you guys are taking us looks pretty good. As to who you guys have connections with and what organizations you guys interact with, I haven't the foggiest idea. Maybe I was the straw to break the camel's back on that subject, I don't know, but I was simply dropping my two cents into the jar.

And this guy is a great guy too. He builds custom rods also. I have always wished we could build a relationship because I think he would teach rod classes if we had enough interest.

Anyway on my last reel, a Straic 4000, I had some rubber hanging out and it was hard to turn. It was a friction ring and he cleaned my reel for $12.00 and installed the new ring in place of the old one. The price of the ring was $ 4.00 extra and he kept it in stock. Took about a week to get it back. Pretty good for the amount of reels he works on.

Ok I think this wins the most unique sponsorship yet! I'm a Scottsman and spent a month preaching in Scottland many years ago. So I recently started a local tradition in two of our churches of celebrating the "Highland Games". I purchased my first Kilt from "Sport Kilt (http://www.sportkilt.com/)" and it is a great kilt.

Now the only question is will this become the designated prize for the Choupique vs. TOC rivalry or will it be in the general prizes category? hmmm..... how to decide?

another good company to try is Costa del mar. It says on their sponsorship page
Fishing tournaments. Water sports. College campuses. We’re a big believer in grassroots initiatives. It’s how we started, and what we depend on. For us, the secret is a brand positioning fit that fosters prosperous growth for all parties involved. In other words, if you see things the same way Costa does and we share a vision, we would love to hear about your event. We want the best for you, and us. An excellent sponsorship alliance is as much a priority to us as making high performance sunglasses.

If you think your event deserves consideration, please click here to download the Costa Del Mar Event Sponsorship Request Form.

would be worth a shot. Here is the link to the page http://www.costadelmar.com//SeeOutThere/JoinCosta/Sponsorships/

doesn't anyone here have a connection at Abita? If not, I think we need to do some recruiting.

Bobby Gros of BobbyLynn's hooked us up with Pepsi (although I would have pushed for sodas this year one way or the other).
All beer requests/complaints should be directed at glwlsu as that is his responsibility.

I did a brewery tour as part of a home brewing class I took at LSU. The tap stayed open the whole time, with some irish red ale. You might check into that LSU leisure course.

Our GTS Expedition seat (http://www.surftosummit.com/gts-expedition-molded-foam-kayak-seat-pack-p-1916.html?cPath=299_294_325) from Surf to Summit just arrived ($190) and I have to say if I get to make the walk to the table and that bad boy is still around - gone baby gone. I own one from last year's tourney and it is a dream to sit in. The pouch on the back is a very nice added touch this year. And it has about an inch more padding than mine did.

Welcome Chag's (http://www.chags.com/Fishing/fishing.html) to our support team! they've added a combo and I think that get's us over 7,000 in cash and prizes.

I want to just take a moment On behalf of All_in and Myself to thank all of you who have pitched in and recruited sponsors - couldn't have done it without a whole bunch of help!

Second Yak has been determined:
Commander 140 here's a review from Austin Kayak:
I was looking for a kayak that I could stand up on to sight cast for redfish and after doing my research, I knew this was going to be the perfect boat. It is very stable and the open cockpit allows for an easy transition from sitting to standing. I am a “big guy” at 295 lbs but moving around in this kayak to access my gear was not a problem. Best of all, it was very comfortable! The kayak performed as well as I had hoped. An employee at the ACK Houston store told me the Commander cuts through the water like a knife and he was right on point. My previous kayak was a Hobie Quest, which was difficult for me to control without a rudder in windy conditions. My Commander tracked extremely well and appeared to paddle just as efficient as my Quest. Once again, I have to mention how easy it was to stand up in this kayak. When I looked at the pictures of the Commander on the Internet, I was concerned about where I would place my feet while standing. I thought that perhaps my ankles would be at odd or uncomfortable angles due to the dual tunnel hull design but I was wrong. There is plenty of room to place your feet adjacent the tunnels, which also helps to brace your calves against the sides for additional stability. Another feature I truly enjoy is the Slide Trax System. The guide rails allow for multiple rigging options without drilling holes in the kayak. I installed a Stake-out-Stick holder and anchor trolley in very little time and if I decide to move (or remove) them later I can do so worrying about leaving holes behind. PROS: 1. Stability – very easy to stand in and the captain’s seat is an ingenious idea. 2. Tracking – paddles smooth and straight 3. Slide Trax – allows for adding accessories without drilling holes. 4. Storage Capacity – with a load rating of 475 lbs even I can haul camping gear. 5. Appearance – sharp lines, comfortable seat and sturdy construction.

Thanks Backpacker!

Wait! Wait! Before I agree to this, who is the person who's hand you ARE NOT supposed to shake in fear of getting the bad fishing mojo? Seem to remember someone with that affliction and it was contagious last year around PP7 time.

Good catch on the bad fishing mojo! It wasn't me, but I don't want to be catching bad mojo either. So...Let's just do the "Howie Mandell" fist bump or just holler and I'll toss ya one!
