Hey does anyone have any expierience using the gortex gaiters (http://www.greatoutdoorsdepot.com/apparel-gators.html)? It's just about due time for a new pair, but I'm just wondering if for fishing purposes should I go with the gortex version or the regular kind? It look like the gortex brands are a little beefier, but are they noticeably heavier?

Gaiters really don't offer enough coverage for kayak fishing. I generally wear the full-on Hazmat suit, over 5mm neoprene chest waders topped off with a gore-tex sombrero.

Gaiters are great for what they're made for: keeping rocks and scree out of your hiking boots. I wouldn't bother with them. Unless the humidity is lower outside the Gore Tex than inside, it does nothing but keep you dry from the rain. It won't breathe.

Unless you're in the mountains or post-holing in snow, don't bother. Try some hip waders or the full-on waders everyone uses down here for winter time. Mung's got it right.

Actually, I didn't see what forum this was posted in(fly fishing). Was trying to figure out why you would wear gaiters in a kayak, hence the joke. In all seriousness, I've never worn gaiters. It is hard to wrap my brain around winter fishing when it's 96 outside. I have some waterproof breathable hunting pants, which I tuck into my muck boots in winter. I've had waves over the side with no problem. Never fell in though.
