I'm gonna try using flies night fishing at the pier at GI next time. I have a 16' jigging pole that I just bought to give it a try.
Something that is available for purchase somewhere or from you. Not something I have to make.
Thanks
Scott
I have a shrimp fly called the bridge side shrimp got it doing a swap. Have yet to give it a try but it's suppose to be a killer bait. It's not a fly but I have also heard of guys fishing the lights in Lake Pont. using the little bass assain minnows like you would use for perch fishing to catch specks. I also have a shrimp fly I tied haven't used it yet but if you PM your address I will mail 1 or 2 of them to you.

Hey, if you're going to the pier, better get there early. My son and some of his friends went this past weekend but didn't get there early enough to get a spot down at the end. They were catching bull reds off the pier at 3 am a couple of days earlier. They opted out of pier fishing when someone suggested they go watch the "oil wrestling" at one of the local bars on the island. How disgusting! Now why would 20-year-old boys want to got see oil wrestling?...just saying :)

Can you buy something like that at Bass Pro or somewhere? Is Beauty Giant a brand name for a finished product or the brand of the weave.
I can tell I may end up tying flies if this works.

First trick is to not go on a Friday or Saturday night. Sundays are slow now that school started, and all other weeknights.
This is a reason we have a friendlier crowd when we go. Plus it is usually the same people off and on every night we go.
I work shift work so I have a lot of weekdays off to fish.

Wasn't that bridgeside shrimp designed by someone for fishing the bridge at GI? At least that's what I think I remember hearing.

I think it was Catch Cormier that came up with that pattern. I tried it this weekend. Got one bump. I've got to say though........ they certainly gave it an EXTRA long look before turning away. Clousers are always good. I wanted to try a couple of the baitfish imitations but they were in the missing fly box. Hmmm.
Check out some of Enrico Puglisi's Flyies. Bay anchovy, finger mullet, Peanut Butter. If one were so inclined...... they could probably get the materials and instruction on tying the different EP Flies from Jarid Malone @ Orvis in Baton Rouge. Think he's offering fly tying 2 Sats a month and 2 Thursdays a month. Great Guy BTW. A VERY accomplished young angler.
For anything Fly Fishing www.laflyfish.com is very hard to beat. It's Catch's website.

I think you are right because when I googled it he had a post on how to tie it.

Can you post a pic of the shrimp? I used a shrimp I tied last weekend and had a problem with the tail. I used a wire leader to tie the the tail fibers in place, but it did not hold well.
edit!!! found it on old forum.

for the bridge at night I'd have these patterns for sure:
Crystal Shrimp - Colors: white, pink, rootbeer, chart, olive
Bridgeside Shrimp - white and pink
Clouser - chart/white, pink/white,
Lafluer Charlie - chart/white, pink/white, black/white
the clouser that Kurt displayed was tied with artificial hair that you can purchase at ethnic beauty supply shops. for a couple of bucks you get a life time supply of material. Beauty Giant is a store that is located in BR. Though you can find the hair at any local beauty supply store.
check out Catch's site for the patterns

I could not remember the name of the synthetic hair when I first posted. It's Kanekalon Hair. If you go to the beauty supply store, you're going to be looking for something like this:
http://www.ebonyline.com/kanekalonhair.html
They typically have a variety of colors. Many shades of brown and black but you'll also find yellow, green, blue, white, red and orange.

Bridgeside Shrimp is Butch's pattern alright. I've seen it at times where it outfishes live bait! And other times where it just gets the look. I think the key is color... tie several of these in different colors and see which one works best that night. According to someone at the RSFF tying session last night, pink was the killer last Friday night.
I've been doing flies under lights for a long time, and if the water is clear, I swear at times they work better than live bait. The secret is to match the hatch - clousers for silversides, shrimp patterns for shrimp, EP flies for croakers and pogies, etc. And the right color as mentioned.
In addition to what LuvDaTigers listed, I'd add:
- white or chartreuse seaducer
- black deceiver (weighted)
- sqwirm (Ted Cabali of New Orleans FF created this fly)
- gummy minnow (closest thing to plastic that a fly can be!)

Yeah. It was pink alright. Match the Hatch that night was....... match the color of the Cooked and Peeled Shrimp the people beside me pulled off of the salad bar before they came to GI. They were doing all right I guess. You know....... pretty much 2 specks at once all night long. But I caught ALL the Hardheads with my Pogies. I'm declaring myself winner by virtue of tonnage. Not mine - the fish.

So sorry Butch. I don't think I've met you at any of the RSFF meetings. Hopefully in the future I can put a Face with a Pattern..... so to speak.

Here's the stuff I am using. It was $1.99 a pack. No tellin' how many flies you can get out of a pack. I've been on the lookout for someone with chartreuse hair for a few years now. Oompa Loompas aside, I haven't seen anyone.

I don't know if you can go too small with a shrimp fly... Last fall ijustwannafish and I were fishing in Buras and while all of our fish were caught on plastics (mine on Bayou Chubs). When we got them home and opened them up, they were slap full of shrimp no more than 3/4" long. The only problem I see would be tying a fly that small on a hook big enough to land the fish.

I've used that Chrystal Shrimp for just about every species that swims... I even caught a 20-lb tarpon on it once! Frank Genusa had a state record redfish, about 20-something pounds, on it. As mentioned on the Suncoast FF website, Tom Springer of Pensacola came up with that pattern. Tom lived in Dutchtown for a year, and became a member of RSFF then and introduced us to a bunch of stuff we hadn't seen before, including this shrimp. It's so simple to tie and easy to cast. With all the complex flies you see tied these days, it's great to know that the simpliest stuff - clousers tied with beauty salon hair, shrimp tied with one strand of crystal chenille and a few strands of crystal flash, spoonflies made of plastic fingernails epoxied to a hook - are "all you need".

I was happy to see Lefty's Deciever make the cut Catch. It's my second favorite trout fly, with my first being the ghost shrimp that I tie. It is really similar to the crystal shrimp and one would say inspired by it, but I had never seen it when I made the fly. Anyway, the clouser, deciever, and some kind of shrimp should be in your box at all times if you have trout on the mind. Add in a crab and spoon and popper for reds. Wolly bugger or other crawfish imitation for bass and anything buggy or spiderlike for bream. Incidentally, you can catch trout, bass, and reds on the same flies (and conventional tackle) on a regular basis.

The most simple shrimp you can imagine. Start some clear iridescent chenille at the eye and wrap to just before the bend, tie in some thin rainbow or silver flashabou styled tinsel and a set of mono eyes then finish the wrap to the bend. Finish and fish. You could also tie in the eyes and cement them down when you wrap the hook if you wanted to let that set up while you wrapped the chenille. If you feel froggy I suppose you could tie that tinsel near the eye and make a small 'tail' and a back for the shrimp as well as antennae - I've seen that done since I made the fly and it looks nice. I've caught ladyfish, juvenile jacks, trout, reds, flounder, and bass on them. I'm pretty sure I hooked a small shark but the mono leader was no match for the sharp teeth of whatever was on the other end so there is no way to know for sure.

I'm going to tie a few of those this afternoon.
BTW.... saw somebody making Mono Eyes recently. He cut off the 80# mono that he needed and put them in a pair of flat nosed pliers. When he put the lighter to them...... he did both sides at once. Walla.......... Mono Eyed ready for tying in. Crimp and Go.
