Just purchased a Native Magic 14'5 and doing some initial set up. Any recommendations would be appreciated. I am right handed, would you recommend putting the anchor trolley system on the left or right? Paddle clips, left or right? When installing anchor trolley, how far back from front and back of the kayak do you suggest? How far down from the edge of the gunwale?

Thanks

Type "how to install an anchor trolley" in to youtube.com. I found a couple of cool instructional videos. I just installed mine the other day. I chose to put it on the left side, but I have not fished it enough to know if that was a good or bad decision.

Hey Tailchaser,

I am in Pearl River too. I am happy to show you what I know of rigging a kayak. My last kayak was a Magic 14.5.

I fish all spinning reels so I prefer to have the anchor trolley on the left side since I hold the rod in my right hand.

I am right handed, so I prefer everything on left side.

I too am right handed. I like having anchor trolley on my left side in case for some reason I need or want to make a side arm cast. Having a marsh anchor sticking up on the right side kinda gets in the way. I have known some to have anchor trolleys on both sides for more flexibility.

Guess I'm the oddball here. I'm a righty and do most of my fishing from port to bow (9 to 12 on the clock). I don't like landing fish with anchor lines or paddles, clips etc... in my way so all my "stuff" is on my right side so as not to interfere.

I use a brush clip anchor with a stake anchor. The brush clip is attached to a length of stretch cord with a carbiner on the other end. I can clip the carbiner off almost anywhere I can reach.

I'm on the same page. I throw across my body and don't want the fish getting wrapped around my anchor on the landing

I find that with a good size red, it doesn't really matter which side you anchor on. He's gonna probably make a few mad dashes under the yak before it's all over with

I ran trolley on both sides although never paid attention to what side I prefer more of a placement for the yak as to where I want to cast, I have a few times even had a anchor on one side with marsh stake on other for a good position

Hard to go wrong with having Joe help you. Since you are in the same location I suggest taking him up on his offer of assistance.

I have to admit that the idea of anchor trolleys on both sides did come to me from pawpawd. I'm glad it did. I like the option of being able to use either side depending upon the wind and current to try to keep the bow at the fish.

Joe is the "Rigging Master"...If you can hook up with him, you will not be sorry! He loves to drill holes in yaks (lol).

Oh, and btw...:welcome:

I am still new to kayak fishing and have a yak that was rigged by someone else. I am right handed and it seems like everything is on the right side. It works pretty well except for a recent trip. I made a side arm cast and my jighead and soft plastic hit the head of my marsh anchor. Other than that I have had no problems. I guess it is a matter of what you want to do.
