I am looking to buy a couple of rods/reels and was hoping to get some information or opinions. I have always fished freshwater with light or ultra light gear. I don't want to just spend a lot, but want something serviceable. Are any of the combo's at Cabela's/Bass Pro or Academy worth looking at?
Any input would be appreciated.

I've had recent problems with shimanos (but that was last year's model) so Cabelas usually has some good deals on the Tourney Choice rods paired with Sedona reels --the cost ends up being retail on the reel and about 20 for the rod (normally $60+). That's a good deal. Go try out some of the rods in the store to know what you want as this is an online price. You order them and have them shipped to the store for free.
Personnally I like the Texas Tackle Factory "speck killer I" rod for $59 at Academy. Perfect rod for catching reds or specks. Like I say I've been having problems with my 2009 Shimanos so I've just purchased and abu garcia. BUT - I have to say that on the one reel the folks at Shimano replaced it with an upgraded reel. So that's pretty important too.

Thanks. Sounds like a trip to Cabelas to check them out. I will also check out Academy to see what they have. Anybody familiar with Pfleuger reels? A salesman at Cabelas was pushing one of those pretty hard.

I haven't heard a lot about Pfleuger. Don't know if I'd trust them to hold up to saltwater. Penns are supposed to be built for saltwater, but I don't know about them either.

My son has one of the Pfleuger cobos. One of the lesser expensive combo spinning set ups. Paint is peeling off the reel from saltwater use. Don't think he rinses the reels off after use though.
I only use Pfleuger spinning reels. I've got 2 that I've never had to re-oil over 2 years now and They come with me every weekend. The paint is starting to flake, but I could care less as they are still solid reels and throw a mile. Last time I went to Cabela's to help a friend out the salesman was trying to talk my buddy out of a pflueger as I was talking him into one. I guess it's just who you ask. Be mindful of the Cabela's rods as they are cheaply made and the guide inserts usually fall out, but the reels are actually made by Daiwa.

I guess the pain flaking off isn't that big of a deal as long as mechanically it still works. The Salesman in Gonzalez was trying to talk me into a Pfleuger reel that he uses. Not expensive, so I might try them out.
I have several Pfleuger Presidents and have never had a problem at all. I do rinse them and spray them when I get home. Great reels IMO.

While I use Shimano Calcutta's 200 GTB baitcasters, I have owned Pfleuger baitcasters and they hold up pretty good. Lots of guides use them because they are a cost leader and they hold up against the constant abuse of clients.

Thanks for all the information. I made the mistake of going into Academy to check them out. I ended up buying a Shimano Sedona Reel and a Falcon rod that was on clearance. I'll see how they hold up and go from there. Again, thanks for the advice. I plan on checking out the Pleuger reels next for a comparison.

Last summer I bought a Pfleuger President combo from Academy to replace my Shimano Symetre set up that fell out my rod holder into the depths of the marsh DOH! Anyway, the Pfleuger President combo is a solid spinning setup. I've never had any problems with it. It casts nicely, and has a smooth feel. Handles big reds with ease. I like it and would recommend Pfleuger spinning reels at least.
