Hey ya'll,
I'm soon to buy my first kayak and was wondering if anyone on here has an extra SUV-suitable rack they are willing to part with (I already have the two standard factor bars on top of my 4runner). If not any suggestions on what brand/model to get?

Like my Yakima roof rack. Used it for cycles, yaks, luggage, etc...etc. Only hangup I have is the rubber pads are expensive $7 ea. X4) for the q-towers and they disolve quickly. If you have the factory mount, that will not be a problem. They make the towers that go directly to the factory roof rack.

Any stores around here that sell decent racks? I'm in the Slidell area. Academy is over here and I know they sell the tie down straps and stuff but I didnt know if I should check out racks at a legitimate kayak store or not.

Backpacker and Masseys both sell Yakima racks ...nice set ups because you buy the pieces according to you vehicle type. I am just wrapping up a system with the "naked" roof (no rain gutters). Nice because you can get the cam lock for the roof mounts.

Massey's in Covington has a pretty good selection of Yakima parts in stock. I was able to get a complete setup there in one trip. If they don't have it, they will usually get it delivered from one of their other stores within a day.

I have the Yakima lockable rack for an Explorer. I'm keeping the bars, but will let the towers go for whatever it will cost me to have a locksmith pick and re-key them. I'll try to get pics on soon.

Did you register the key codes with Yakima? Are they locked on your Explorer?

My brother in law gave me the racks when he started using the Explorer as a trail vehicle. I do not have an Explorer. We were able to get the towers off of the truck by loosening the allen screws that hold it down in the track on the roof. The cross bars are locked into the towers. All I want is the cross bars. The towers are up for grabs if I can get them off the bars.
I have an old Yakima Rack that fit on my Jeep Cherokee factory rack. IDK if it would fit on your 4 runner though. Check out their website. Can't remember if I gave my 48" bars away, but they had some rust spots.
You can find some cheap stuff on e-bay, if you watch awhile. That's how I got my current set up, for my FJ factory rack.

I have the 48" bars, boat loader and towers that I want to sell. You will just need to get the landing pads and Massey's has those. Send me a PM if you are still looking.

Yakima Hully Rollers
I had this set up years ago on an old car. I imagine the design is even better now.

Academy has pair of malone cross bars for $99.00. they looked like they would work great.
Your factory crossbars are not strong enough to hold a kayak in the wind generated by driving at highway speeds. I have the Yakima Towers from my 1993 Jeep Cherokee, which clipped on to the factory siderails. IDK if they would fit the 4 runner, but it or something similar is what is recommended. You'd have to find some crossbars and saddles to go on it. Look at www.yakima.com

we've carried two kayaks on factory crossbars on a GMC Yukon with no issues.

Yes we did! And the bars didn't flex at all. Most factory roof rack bars can carry 100 - 150 lbs. And that accounts for travel speeds. (Though I realize shape can impact the amount of wind that the cargo catches, and therefore, the force). But if you notice, most roof top cargo containers will catch more wind than a kayak.
