The marsh stake thread posted earlier motivated me to start on one. Last year, I bought a few 48" fiberglass paddle shafts for another project. Since I had an extra laying around, I decided to put it to use. Tonight, I made an aluminum tip for it. Tomorrow, I'll make the butt cap. I found 62" fiberglass shafts for sale online. I'm waiting to hear how much shipping will be for a few shafts. These shafts are straw/yellow in color rather than black and 1 1/4" in diameter like the paddle shaft I have. If I can make a stake out pole with aluminum ends in the $50 range, is anyone interested in one?

Cool. I just checked, the actual length is 62" not 72". I can cut it down to any length you'd want. With the ends it will be 3-4" longer. Shipping is going to be the key to whether or not I can make it for around $50. Shipping for one shaft is $20. Hopefully, multiple shafts will bring the per shaft cost down.

I would like to take a look at yours when you're done with it. Sounds like it would work pretty well.

Sure. I may finish it tomorrow. I'm considering adding a composite cork grip to the top, but that would cost more to add.

Kurt, put me down for one if the unit cost is around $50-60. Thanks.

I finished the butt cap a few minutes ago. I haven't located the composite cork rings I have somewhere around the house. Before I make up my mind on a cork grip, I need to try to bore a 1 1/4" hole in the rings. That may be tough to do.

I haven't heard from the seller of the shafts regarding shipping charges.

Finished another stake out pole tonight. RedFinn, let me know if you are interested. It is 56" long with an approximately 1 1/4" diameter shaft. The foam grip and end cap are approximately 1 1/2" diameter. The shaft is green.

Just out of curiosity, how are you securing the aluminum ends into the fiberglass tube?

5 minute epoxy. I roughed up the inside with a file and cleaned with acetone. I left the aluminum plug end rough too to help with adhesion and also cleaned it with acetone.
