View Full Version : standing in your hobie
Often times I wish I could stand and sight cast, does anyone stand in a hobie?
I know some of the other brands are more stable and people stand in them all the time,I had a canoe I could stand all day in, but my revolution and the sport both feel too squirrelly,
I have seen threads on homemade outriggers on other forums, has anyone here tried it?

I stand on my hobie and fish all the time. I usually stand up and castnet from my hobby as well. You just have to get use to it. I know the sport and the revolution isn't as wide as my outback or outfitter but standing from them shouldn't be a problem in the protected marsh.

Standing up/drifting thru the marsh is my favorite way to fish. I do it with great regularity.

standing in a revo is kinda tippy, but an outback is really easy, and a pro angler you can have two people stand in it.... and dance.

You guys who are standing in a Revo must be younger, thinner and more athletic than I am. On calm waters I can stand in it, carefully, stretch a bit and then sit back down. I'm skeered to try to fish from it while standing.

I love fishing from my outback because it is so easy to stand in. And the couple of times I have been in a ProAngler, I have not only stood up, but walked around.

The revo is a bit tricky to stand in. I do it, but boy am I careful when I do. the revo is just to slim to fish and stand constantly in my opinion. The outback and outfitter are fine for it though. The PA is like standing on dry land, I stand in back of the seat and fish all the time. Would take a lot of wave movement to take a swim from that boat.

I don’t really like standing in the revo; but neither did i like standing in a T140 / P13... its doable not comfortable.

True, there is definitely no problem standing in the PA. I haven't tried walking to the back yet, but it is a very boat.
As for the stabalizers, I made a set from two boat bumpers and had it on my Pelican once. They worked well and made a very unstable boat standable, but mine had no way to move up and down so they created WAY too much drag. If you decide to go that route, try to figure out a way to move them off the water while traveling.

 When standing and drifting.......do flatten the fins against the Hobie's belly.....don't leave them in the down position such that they could bump a crab trap, log, etc.
Just sayin'.

That is a very good tip Snake Doctor! Had not thought about that....

Neither had I until I tried it. When you are standing and casting and the yak is drifting along on a gentle breeze and then it suddenly stops because a dangling fin catches on something it becomes a memorable trip.

I definitely got the mental image once you mentioned it as a precaution...

I catch 90 % of my redfish while standing up in the yak. If I couldn't stand up and sight fish I'd be in trouble.

I have the Pro Angler and it is real easy to stand in, insulated the front hatch put ice in it and just walk to it and put the fish in it.

That sounds worthy of a seperate thread, complete with pics for those of us that may want to follow suit.

I agree! I thought about trying to insulate it so it holds ice better, but I didn't know how to go about it. I would love to get a step-by-step on that.

I stand in my Outfitter all the time. If your fishing in open water, i.e. a bay, lake, gulf - just keep your eyes out for big swells on a less windy day and you will be alright. In the marsh, its a cakewalk. Just don't fall in, you don't want to scare those reds off!
