I am looking for a new kayak and I am looking hard at the Ultimate 12 but I can't pay that price. I missed the deal that Danny had.

But I think I found something that might work just as well. Keeping in mind that I don't fish open water too often, so an Ultimate would be ok; and knowing that I will definitely do some sort of modification because that is just who I am. This is what I have found:

What is the basic opinions out there?

A number of guys in the fly fishing club use similar Old Town canoes (Pack model). Most of them use stabilizers due to stability issues. I know two guys that dumped in a Pack. My canoe is narrower, but longer. I don't have any stability problems and have no problem standing and paddling or casting. I guess it is what you are comfortable with it. If you stand a lot, I'd prefer the flat bottom of the canoe over the boats with round bottoms. I can't remember if it's the Commander, Ultimate or Native that has the arched bottom. The price is right.

I think it is a good deal and is a very serviceable watercraft. I looked at those long and hard before I bought my yak. It has a good weight capacity for lots of gear and grub in case you ever wanted to camp for a few days. I guess the only issue is the open deck in high waves. Overall ****/*****.

This may not be as important to you but if I were to go with a canoe I'd have to make sure it would hold a 48 qt. ice chest.

Will this one hold a 48 qt?

Joe, I have an Old Town Sport that is slightly longer (14') than the Guide. I had looked at the Guide but wanted the ability to fish two people comfortably so I bought the longer boat. Mine paddles well with a kayak paddle and it will hold more than I need to carry. In my limited experience so far, thare are a couple of trade-offs with the canoe over the kayak. One is weight. My boat weighs about 85#, so it is a handful to load. Since I carry it on a soft-top Jeep, I bought one of the canoe loader's from Cabela's to help with that problem, and can now handle it solo. Another issue, mine has to have weight added to the front when I am solo to keep the bow out of the wind and help it track. I put a 48 qt ice chest as far forward as possible, and will also add a small cooler full of water at the very tip of the bow to make sure I have enough boat in the water on windy days. I am not sure if you would have the same effect with the shorter, lighter canoe, but it is worth considering.. I am willing to deal with the issues for the ability to take my wife on the occasional trip. Your results may vary...

Friend of mine has been looking for an Ultimate 14.5 and called. It's the Magic 14.5 that they have for $799, not the Ultimate 14.5.

Seems like a pretty good deal. They sell that same boat at Academy for $480 brand new.

I have the guide 147 from academy, the only thing I don't like is the weight, but you shouldn't have that problem with the smaller boat. As far as rigging goes, I made boards that clamp to the gunwales and put rod holders and cleats and things on the boards (sort of like a console) There are a lot of options (I plan on putting oarlocks on it at some point). The 147 is really stable and I can stand in it - I really like it.

I am not able to get anything until my overtime check comes in on the 16th! But I am sure some of the Newbies out there would be willing to purchase your yak. Post on it's own thread under Buy/Sell.
