View Full Version : How much line is enough but not too much?

I'm experimenting with an older, but very clean ABU Ambassador 6000 reel. I ditched the weighted trolling line that came on it & replaced it with 20# mono. The casting improved significantly. I put what I believe to be a reasonable amount of line on the spool - I'm guessing 75 - 100 yds but that only filled the reel to perhaps 20% capacity. Is there any "logic" to putting on additional line? Do they cast/perform better when filled to a greater degree? Is there a "sweet spot" or "ideal range" to target for spool capacity?

I'd sugest filling it until it's about 1/8th of an inch from the rim of the spool.

+ 1. On a spinning reel if you put too much it wants to fall off the spool but a baitcaster that should about right.

I usually fill my baitcasters to within 1/8" from the edge of the spool. By that I mean probably between 1/16" and 1/8" from the edge. That ABU 6000 should have a capacity of somewhere around 200 yards of 20# mono. Maybe a little shy of that.

Great. Thanks for the feedback. I'll fill it up & give it a try.
I'd go with lighter line, maybe 12#, filled to 1/8-1/4 of the spool edge. The closer to the edge you get, the more backlash probs you have. however, less line makes casting harder.
