View Full Version : What spoon are you throwing?

With the Redfish action picking up I've noticed the topic of spoons coming up a lot more. We don't have many categories of reference on the new forum, so I thought this would be a good chance to start a topic about what spoons everyone are throwing.

I have had the most success with the Nemire Lures Red ripper in Chartreuse for Reds and the Acme Kastmaster Silver/ Blue for trout. Just before Christmas I was tearing up the trout over in Hopedale on the silver/blue kastmaster. This was also my lure/color choice for Rainbow tout when I lived in California. For some reason the trout seem to love them. Just wanted some opinions from others to compare? Swamppro has given good reviews on the new Marsh Works spoon and It sounds like a new winner as well. If anyone has a picture of the Marsh Works spoon, can they post it please?

I use the Johnson spoon 1/4 ounce, sometimes i put a small curly tail grub on it. The grub doesnt really help much, but it makes me feel better.

I use to throw the Johnson 1/2 spoon, but because I use baitcasters I had to add a swivel to stop the line from twisting. The problem was that I lost several fish due to the swivel opening. FOr that reason I changed to The Secrect from H&H. They do the job and they aren't that much more with the swivel incorporated into the spoon. Just a word of advice, get them at Academy. So much cheaper! http://www.hhlure.com/thesecrespeckredfishtspoons.html

Nemier Red Ripper gold spoon, may change the skirt to get a different color (usually gold or red skirt). I also use the gold red ripper buzz spoon.

I also like the Johnson Silver Minnow in black (1/4 oz)

Don't fish trout with a spoon....I'm a plastic chunker...90% of the time for reds, specks, and flounder.

I'm actually pro staff with nemire (funny and long story to that - its not the result of my great skills). I really like them but when I'm searching for fish I get about two cast to one with the Johnson sprite. Here's a little secret (since the secret from H&H doesn't come in 1/8th ounce) put a split ring on the front of your gold spoon then put a regular swivel on it (not a snap swivel since they fail so often) now you are twist free.

Soon I should be getting a couple of the Nemire Spin Rippers in pearl chartreuse pearl can't wait for those bad boys. The buzz ripper you need is the pear - chartreuse with a pearl tail. Great for fishing over the salad. Also you can take off the skirt and you have a inline spinner (it sinks without the skirt).

So short version I keep a Johnson and a Nemire on. I caught one on each this weekend. Third one was something else entirely.

Great topic. I like to work my spoons really slowly - I like 1/8 Johnson's silver minnows and 1/4 oz Neimire's Red Rippers because they stay off the bottom on a really slow retreive. I like silver and black ones best.

Johnson weedless gold spoon in the 1/4 oz size. I find they go scarce toward the end of the summer so I usually keep a few in stock.

I (almost) ALWAYS have a spoon tied on one of my poles. Typically it's a Bagley's Gem Cut 1/8th ounce weedless spoon with a Hildebrandt size 3.5, gold, inline spinner in front of it.

I use Johnson's 1/8th oz. and 1/4 oz. too.

I LOVE the inline spinners except in early spring time when fulminous algae (green slime) is prevalent.

Spoon + spinner = slower retrieve with a LOT more flash. Slower retrieve = more time in strike zone. More time in strike zone = more fish!

Dat's my 2¢

I use the H&H in 1/2 oz Gold and do exactly this for all my spoons. O-ring pliers are only about $5 and o-rings and swivels are really cheap. I stopped using the Johnson because the H&H are better quality for the same cost, and I don't use the Nemire because of my experiences with the hooks breaking.

The nemire hook problem is actually what got me on board with them - one broke during a tourney but since it was dark I didn't realize it till later in the day- I emailed the company and the owner called me back. They've changed the hooks and I have not had one break off since. I have had hooks break on Johnson spoons too. Reds are tough fish.

That kirk's fly caught me my first and only red on the fly in PAC. Sight casted to it. That was a rush. I just don't know why I keep leaving the fly rod home.

That's it the others should be long gone.
