I'm definitely up for that! Am I reading that right? It only costs $25 for the CCA membership and $25 for the STAR tourny? When I register, do I need to specify that I will be fishing from a kayak?

In light of the recent IFA cancellation I feel compelled to participate in kayak tournaments to keep sponsored interest in the sport.

Am I understanding this correctly? According to the rules tab under Kayak rules it says "...Eligible fish: one speckled trout (over 14”)." No mention of Redfish. Perhaps someone could elaborate for the slow kid (me).

Also there is no "Mother Shipping" in the Kayak division in the STAR. I asked because there is no mention in the rules on the website.

It's only trout. They have different divisions. It really is not that much. When you weigh your fish just make sure it's in the Kayak Division unless you think you can win a "stinkboat". Tumbleweed won one last year.

I prefer redfish but this could be fun too.

You might catch one of the 50 tagged redfish and win a truck, Boat etc etc

yak-aholic
06-23-2010, 07:13 PM
You would still have a chance of catching a tagged redfish and winning a stinkpot. Other than that, you can enter your fish in whatever category you might think you have a chance in. Just 'cause you're fishing out of a kayak don't think you're limited to the kayak division. Most of the categories are off-shore species, but there are flounder, bass, and fly (trout only) divisions that you would qualify for as well. I'm gonna enter this time.

No need to specify when registering. Your STAR entry covers the entire tourny, you only need to specify which division you would like to enter once you register your fish at the weigh station. But be warned they don't play in this tourny. All winners are subject to a polygraph. So if you catch something from a stinkpot you can't say you were in a kayak but if you were in a kayak you ARE allowed to enter that fish in the regular section for a NEW stinkpot but it will only be entered in ONE division only.

I lol'ed at that one Joe. Is there a fly division? I need to go look at the rules. What if I catch a honking speck on the fly from a kayak, can I enter him twice?

Check rule # 27 for Fly Fishing

You can enter as many fish as you want. You can enter multiple fish in the same division. You can enter multiple fish in multiple divisions. But.... as idunno said...A single fish can only be entered into a single division and you have to declare that at time of weigh-in. You can only win one division, even if you have the top fish in multiple divisions.

OK, let's say you did get lucky and catch the top fish in 2 categories along with a tagged red. Would you then be able to select which category you wanted to take your prize from, or would they pick for you?

Speckled_Tiger
06-24-2010, 07:15 AM
just from past years observation, their tagged redfish category works like our Cajun Slam category in that all the prizes for a tagged red are better than the prizes for any 1st place winner in the other categories. I don't think this is at all official, just seems to be that way so you would want to take the tagged redfish prize, just wouldn't make sense not to.

Where Y'ak?
06-24-2010, 08:03 AM
Note:

For the 2009 STAR, seven people caught tagged redfish and NONE of them were registered in the tournament. No one that was registered in STAR caught one of the tagged reds last year. It must be tough to filet and eat a $25K redfish!

I DID IT!
I DID NOT WANT TO!
BUT I DID RENEW MY MENBERSHIP IN CCA OF LOUISIANA YESTERDAY!
NOT BECAUSE OF STAR AND NOT BECAUSE I HAVE FORGOTEN THAT THEY DO NOT REFLECT ALL MY VIEWS!

I RENEWED BECAUSE THE OIL SPILL IN THE GULF MAKES IT MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER FOR ALL lOUISIANA'S TO HAVE SOMEONE TO SPEAK FOR THEM ON COASTAL RESTRATION AND CONSERVATION!

Tigerfish
06-24-2010, 06:32 PM
Is there any organization that reflects all of your views? Haha
I haven't found one yet for sure. Kinda like the story of people catching a bag full of trout from a kayak. Haven't seen in it person and definitely haven't experienced it for myself.

Anyway, even if i didn't agree with cca on any level I would still sign up for star. Couldn't live with myself if I caught a tagged redfish but wasn't registered. I don't agree with most politicians but I still buy powerball tickets.

I agree that we all need someone or some group to stand up for our coast. BP surely won't and our politicians don't seem capable either.

Sure it is all across the coast of Louisiana. As Where-yak stated no one registered caught one last year.

Where Y'ak?
06-29-2010, 11:51 AM
50 tagged reds are released all across the southern state. Prizes are awarded up to the first ten that are caught by registered anglers. The locations are always secret, but in years past, fish have been caught in almost all popular areas. Grand Isle has always been lucky with tagged reds caught on the first day of the tournament-multiple times.

The spill this year may affect the actual release locations. Every year, there are several tagged fish caught by fishermen who have not registered for STAR. Last year all seven that were caught were by non-participants.

Prizes for 2010:
Tagged Redfish
(1) Chevy Silverado
(1) Harley Davidson motocycle
(8) 211 Mako with 150 hp Mercury OptiMax

REDFISH RULES: 28. Fifty tagged redfish will be released into the coastal waters prior to the start of the tournament. The red tags on the redfish will read No. LA (126-225) 2010 CCA Louisiana / STAR. Only the first ten (10) redfish entered bearing the above described tag numbers will receive a prize. To be eligible, each tagged redfish, with the tag still attached to the fish, must be entered into the Tournament at a designated official STAR weigh station, within 24 hours of being landed. The date and time of entry must be clearly marked on the official STAR weigh form. Each participant shall be eligible to win only one prize for a tagged redfish. All tagged redfish immediately become the property of CCA Louisiana. If at the Tournament’s conclusion, there are no official winners in the tagged redfish division, the STAR committee will determine the disposition of tagged redfish division prizes.

Just to let everyone know that is years past, if no tagged redfish was caught by a certain date then they released more. To my knowledge they have never announced the date before hand, but they do make a big announcement the day after they release more fish. Don't think that there is any guarantee that this will happen every year, though it makes since to keep excitement and participation up.

I get the truck and boat as prizes. Both are very desirable as prizes for sportsmen. What' s the deal with the Harley? Yeah, I know it has a monetary value, but what does it have to do with a fishing tourney? I would have to sell it because even the tax value is more than it is worth to me. I'm sure I'm not alone in this thinking. Not that I would be throwing back the second redfish if I caught one.

Probably somewhere around 20k+ depending on what model and how many extras it has. Although riding is another hobby of mine (Not a Harley ... too rich for my blood, lol), I don't see the exact tie either. More than likely, it was either donated to STAR or they were given a pretty good discount.

As much as I wouldn't mind having a Harley, right now I'd probably sell it. Could get a whole fleet of yaks and a low-end stinkpot for what they're worth.
