View Full Version : ANCHORING SYSTEMS
I am looking to set up an anchoring system of some sort on my kayak. I like the poles because they are perfect for the marsh but i often fish in water deeper than 3 to 4 ft. So, i need something that can be anchored in deeper water as well as the pole. I am looking for any suggestions to set something up on my OK Scrambler XT And if there is an alternative to buying one of those expensive marsh stakes? Maybe like building one out of pvc pipe or something like that.

Read the post in this rigging section on PVC Marsh Stake for ideas. I use a mushroom anchor for deeper water.

+1 on the mushroom anchor for deep water and the stake out pole for shallows.
ditto on the previous posts on anchor and stake out pole. Also check out the pages regarding anchor trolley set ups.

Break Drum off old car works, is cheap, and does not get hung up...and it is just about the right weight...
I use a plough anchor, along with a PVC stake out pole made by Cajun Paddle Tools. One for shallow, one for deep water. If shallow enough, I stick the pole through my carry handle and don't even have to tie off. More importantly, the plough is the only relatively lightweight anchor I've found that will hold me in tough winds. I think mine is about 1kg and I found it at Pack & Paddle in Lafayette.

PVC stake out pole works great, and I use a 5 lb dumbbell for deeper water. It's holds surprisingly well.

I use a folding anchor it is an easy setup. But if you plan on doing it, make sure you rig it right.

I think the plough anchor that Mung is talking about is actually the 1 kg (2.2 lb) Bruce style anchor currently marketed by Lewmar. Add about 1 lb. of chain and I believe you have the best, lightweight option for deep water. They can be bought at West Marine for $7-$8.

Oh, man the brake drum sounds like a great idea, but how do you tie? or do you use a short chain attached where? Shallow I want to find a nice size piece of Bamboo. cut on an angle for a point. also for my Kayak joisting too! Thats the cool think about this forum, lots of crafty ideas, I really like it.
